    Comic Watch - Dustin Gebel

Stillwater #18 is a haunting conclusion to a series that not only refreshed the notion of immortality as a curse but explored the psychological and spiritual implications that come along with it. Zdarskys script for the issue encapsulates everything that made this series, blending action and strong character work between flashes of existential dread. Prezs art captures an interesting clash between the picturesque aesthetic of Americana with the grotesque depictions of violence. Adding in Spicers vivid and wide-ranging palette that morphs to the tone or material presented on the page, and Wootons clean, concise lettering, Stillwater is a book that will long past its ending. 'Stillwater' #18 weaves together most of the threads and moments that have been growing and building since this series began, wrapping up the story of this immortal horror series while leaving plenty to be explored if they so choose. At its heart, this is a story about people moving beyond violence and fear, finding themselves amongst the horrors that the world places upon us. Highly recommended read for any comic book fans. While there are still plenty of questions to be answered and seemingly even more story to be told, this pause before the possibilities of a new beginning is still quite potent. Read Full Review

I saw this ending coming from a mile away. The fact that the issue ends so abruptly on that moment doesn't help. It's like the story misses out on its most interesting implications by ending right here. As though Zdarsky and company had too much on their plates otherwise, and decided this series needed to go. I didn't dislike this issue, don't get me wrong. I just sort of feel unfulfilled by it in a way that's probably unfair to the comic.
