It's a dark story that's microscopic on the surface, before exploding in scope with just the littlest peak under the hood and Walta's lineart is one of those that can provide the necessary range. Not only that, but it carries the script forward like the folktale it is. Read Full Review

Walta delivers some great visuals throughout the issue. The art is beautifully detailed and does a wonderful job of complementing the tone and world of the story. Read Full Review

While the first issue of Phantom Road offers an intriguing mystery to unpack straight out of the Twilight Zone, the second issue sets up a story where our protagonists are on the run and may be in the wrong. You'll start questioning if it's all in their head, making the road ahead all the more dangerous. Weird, unnerving, and sometimes haunting, Phantom Road is another unique hit from Lemire and Walta. We expect a lot out of our comics superstars. And when they don't deliver an amazing experience, it can feel like that particular story is a failure. Phantom Road is a fine story, but nowhere near the level that most readers come to expect from the likes of this creative team. Read Full Review

Honestly, 'Phantom Road' might be more satisfying as a trade so there's a resolution to all the questions that aren't found so far. But if you trust in Lemire, and like a slow haunting journey through the unknown then this is for you. 'Phantom Road' is excellently crafted despite not giving away too many details. Phantom Road #2 is a great follow-up to the impressive debut issue of the series. Jeff Lemire builds greater investment in series leads, Dom and Birdie, journey through strong character interactions. These interactions build a mystery that leaves you wanting to continue reading to find out what is going on. Read Full Review

    Comic Watch - Dustin Gebel

Phantom Road #2 is an underwhelming follow-up to a strong opening issue, steering too far into the mechanics of the story and losing its characters in the process. At the level of the creative team, the issue is still competently made, displaying instances of strong panel composition and exquisite coloring choices. With the track laying hopefully finished for now, the next issue could well leave this lacking installment in the rearview for a return to strong form with issue #3. Read Full Review
