Monstress #16 is a slightly underwhelming issue, even if the character work done on Zinn and Maika is interesting. Sana Takedas artwork is still beautiful, but it doesnt quite make up for how dull the remainder of the comic can be. I can recommend it to followers of Monstress, but its far from being required reading for the week. Feel free to check it out, though. Read Full Review

The brilliance of Takeda's illustrations is often in the details, the sweeping lines, and the use of midtones to evoke a world beaten down by tyranny. In this issue the action between characters is weighed down and muddled by those features, obscuring much of what's actually happening. Add to that this reader's growing frustration with the 2-dimensionality of Maika (After 16 issues all we know is that she's irritable, quick-tempered, and generally aloof to others. Teenagers. Sheesh.) and there's not a lot keeping Monstress interesting.

This issue is surprisingly dull. "Monstress" usually maintains a strong sense of tension and suspense, but this instalment doesn't really offer much intrigue. It's pretty looking, but also pretty dull.
