MINISERIES PREMIERE!
Director/screenwriter DARCY VAN POELGEEST boasts a long list of awards and accolades for his storytelling prowess and brings the same writing finesse to IAN BERTRAM's breathtakingly detailed artwork in the gorgeous, hyper-detailed miniseries LITTLE BIRD.
With the same limitless scope as a new EAST OF WEST or SAGA and the drama and surrealism of Akira, LITTLE BIRD follows a young resistance fighter who battles against an oppressive American Empire and searches for her own identity in a world on fire.

Big Comic Page - Craig Neilson-Adams

    Feb 18, 2019

Every so often a comic comes along that grabs you from the get-go, either with its unconventional creativity, its striking originality or its passionate execution. Or, in the case of LITTLE BIRD, with all three. An utterly fascinating, gorgeously illustrated opening salvo in what promises to be a savage assault on the senses, this is a new series I simply cant recommend highly enough. Read Full Review

Having gone from not knowing a single thing about this series, I can say with full confidence that I really enjoyed reading it. The world-building, characters, and overall concept of the series is sure to attract many readers. The last few pages set up the second installment perfectly. Even though this is a limited series, I'm looking forward to seeing where Little Bird's adventure goes from here. Read Full Review

A nigh-perfect debut, by the end of Little Bird #1 I found myself already melancholic that the series is only five issues. Simply put, if Little Bird continues this high a level of storytelling, well all have to mention it in conversations about Images creator-owned resurgence, right alongside Saga, Wicked + Divine, God Country, etc.. This is one fine comic. Read Full Review

The Pop Break - Rachel Freeman

    Mar 15, 2019

Not only do we have these amazing characters, but we have probably the best villain for them to fight. Essentially he's a dictator and some kind of priest or Pope type character, and he's very representative of the Christian America, the views it had (and let's be honest, many still have), and the way America went about destroying all in its path that didn't adhere to its beliefs on God. Which may trigger some people, but while Little Bird may be fictional, American history was very real, and to me, that makes this story a necessary one to tell and to read. Read Full Review

    Pastrami Nation - Nolan Smith

I was blown away with this first issue. I couldnt find a physical copy as the shops have sold out, so I checked it out digitally, and glad I did. Little Bird is a story of freedom and fighting for whats right, no matter what it might cost you. Poelgeest gives us a very cool, original story, and the insanely detailed artwork by Bertram is some of the best and most intricate I have seen in a series. Go check out Little Bird before it flies off the shelves everywhere. Read Full Review

This is another stellar book coming out from Image and is highly recommended. Also, if you are looking to get this, from the back-matter, it seems this will only be available in single issues for the time being, so if you want a copy, or are usually a trade-waiter, you might want to jump on this fast before they are all gone. Comicsverse - Jeremiah Johnston

    Mar 13, 2019

LITTLE BIRD #1 is a comic full of ideas that innovates at both the character and setting level. Yet a major weakness of this first entry is ignoring the compelling story of the titular character by cross-cutting with exposition about the world. Ian Bertram's art nevertheless brings character to both the players and the locales of this world not quite like our own, and the book ends with a set-up for what will likely become a paradigm-setting comic. There's a lot to unpack in this story for a first issue though, so it might require a second pass, but that's hardly a downside considering how easy it is to become immersed in Little Bird's world. Read Full Review

    Graphic Policy - Brett

The first issue has a lot of potential and I want to see where it goes. There's a good chance the miniseries will read better as a whole than it does as single issues and those issues I have with the weird visuals will be explained later. Little Bird #1 absolutely creates and builds an interesting world but leaves too much out there not explained or acknowledged to not distract from the main story. Read Full Review

I decided to check this out after hearing about it on the Devil's AdvoCATES Book Club podcast. I didn't know what to expect, but this is actually really, really fun. I don't know if the praise it has gotten is totally warranted by this first issue, but it sure did make an impact, which is something, I think, that many indies struggle with. I'll read the rest of this, for sure.

Decent first issue of something that has to potential to be great if the "Christians are evil and also white/male privilege" narrative doesn't completely take over the book.

Little Bird is a challenging story set in an alternate future version of our world where people are fighting against a bloodthirsty government army led by a bloodthirsty religious zealot. Little Bird's mother is leading the last of a resistance against the "United Nations of America", a fanatical religious organization that is invading Canada in pursuit of their Holy Empire. She will do anything to protect her lands, including sending her daughter alone across the Canadian Rockies in search of "The Axe", an unstoppable warrior that may be the last salvation for the North and the World. It might sound a bit confusing to you - don't worry, it is, but it is. Also worth the time it might take to make some sense of it all. This sto more

Hmmmmmmmm... It's extremely blunt. I mean, the first scene literally spells out the themes for us. Oh, and the villains are radical, ruling Catholics who openly espouse any science. Uh-huh. The dialogue is straining to be Morrison, yet it lacks the same flourish. Got DUNE vibes. But Ian Bertram's art is hard to shake. It's very textured, like Frank Quitely or Chris Burnham but has its own flavor. Needless to say, the art makes the book. No matter how silly or obvious the ideas are, they're brought to disturbing life. Did not expect the ending. Not sure it's the best direction but it, shall we say, subverted my expectations (DUN DUN DUNNNN!). Even with its problems, I'll check out the next issues. PS: the afterword says th more
