Limbo #5

Every month I gush about the work that Dan Watters and Caspar Wijngaard are doing. Every month they deserve the praise I give them and more besides. Limbo #5 is beautiful, haunting, upsetting, and ends on the kind of cliffhanger that makes you wish you could see the future if only to find out what'll happen next. So much happened in this Sandy-focused issue and it was glorious. Next month, we'll find out what happens with Clay and his truth , Sandy's "visitor", and who wins the wager. Watters and Wijngaard have really brought this fantastical story to vivid life and I really, really want to know what the hell is going to happen next. I gave issue 2 a rather spiffy 4-out-of-5, and then my brother in arms Ross bumped that score up to a 5-out-of-5 for issues 3 and 4. I have to say that this series started well and has just improved in leaps and bounds as the creative team build and reveal more and more of their tale. Read Full Review

Limbo reads like the direct result of taking a handful of psychotropic drugs and driving around aimlessly on a full tank of gas. Its that awesome. This book is really good looking- the art is really solid, and VERY unique. The story itself has become quite a bit more confusing. It felt to me that this book was saving up every big word it could for this issue, and then threw them all together in the most confounding possible configuration. The visuals of the last page really grossed me out, which is a feat in and of itself, but beyond that I wasn't extremely impressed with this issue as a whole. Like I said, the art is really good, and the strange spiders that try and hijack Clay's roommate's essence to return to the mortal realm were really creepy and interesting to look at. But the fact that they are ancient members of her "otherworldly" lineage, and that they would kill her in orde r to put themselves into the physical realm seemed a bit out of place, but if it wasn't- then why didn't she think that is what was happening, instead of being rescued by a weird guardian angel-meets-jiminy cricket character who is actually a He-Man knockoff action figure? That is where this book lost me- killer grandparents who are in the form of thought-spiders and an action figure who saves the day for a girl who looks like she is made up of energy anyway- without a corporeal form to overtake in this realm anyway. Maybe im just overthinking this story, and it just isn't for me. But regardless, it wasn't very good, and the story felt VERY muddled by this issue, even though it's intention was to clarify much, if not all, of the unanswered questions of the series. more
