SERIES PREMIERE! HEY KIDS! COMICS! takes its cue from nearly a century of turbulence and triumph, despair and drama in the comic book racket. Artists and writers, con men and clowns, ganefs and gangsters, create the foundations of today's biggest entertainment business-or at least the tail that wags the dog. Some of it really happened, and the names have been changed to protect the innocent and guilty... although in the end, everyone was guilty of something.

Although HEY KIDS! COMICS! #1 isn't going to set the world on fire, Howard Chaykin's WOLF OF WALL STREET meets MARVEL: THE UNTOLD STORY premise about the comic book industry is fascinating. There's betrayal, corporate greed, and resentment. While it's rough around the edges, anyone who wants a semi-realistic account of the heyday of comics will enjoy it. Otherwise, if you're looking for a general history of comic books or a parody of superhero comics, this isn't it. Read Full Review

Hey Kids! Comics is an ambitious series by Howard Chaykin. It's a conduit of controversy, focused on the birth of the comic book business as we know it, and the fictionalized seedy backroom deals and personal dramas that laid the foundation for it to be the powerhouse conglomerate it is today. All in all, this first issue didn’t capture me in the slightest and I doubt that I will give its next issue a chance. I didn’t hate it but I definitely didn’t like and that made it feel like a chore to read. Between the harsh dialogue, uninviting artwork, and bland storytelling, I personally didn’t find anything in this issue that would inspire me to regard this as a great comic book and I definitely didn’t find a reason to continue reading the series. It's genuinely hard to believe that even a publishing house with an ongoing relationship with Chaykin like Image Comics accepted this submission. Keep it. Read Full Review

Overall, the story is a good way to learn about the comic industry throughout the decades. The characters were an ambitious group of adults trying to survive another day. The art style was very nice to look at, but I just wished for a little more when it came to character expressions. Overall, this comic is for the reader that wants to take a trip in time to see how a winner is made. Read Full Review
