Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #90

The tension in the air in TMNT #90 is palpable. You can feel everything starting to build up to the “City at War” story arc. There are a lot of crazy things being set up in TMNT #90. It has me very excited to see where the creative team is taking us to issue #100 and beyond. If you're a long-time reader of IDW's TMNT series you'll be familiar with these sorts of issues. A deep breath before the next big plunge, where Waltz, Eastman and Curnow subtly shift their playing pieces into position for the upcoming storyline. In that respect this issue certainly delivers, and while it may not provide the same level of excitement as other recent single issues, its impact in the long run is likely to prove invaluable. It seems like forever ago that Slash was tragically killed in TMNT #88. In between that issue and this one we've had the entirety of the Macro-Series. The TMNT 20/20 One - Shot and the prior issue which was essentially a Christmas Special.  This issue serves as an interlude and bridge into the upcoming storyline. The comic opens with Michelangelo giving a eulogy for the fallen mutant. Mikey has a light-hearted take on the situation. This is broken up by Old Hob, who has a more dire assessment of the preceding events and is ready to launch a full assault on Agent Bishop and the Earth Protection Force.  I'm two minds about the issue. On its own, the issue doesn't really have any standout moments and is ultimately skippable if y ou haven't been plugged into the storyline's playing out around this issue.  What I really liked about this comic is that it the entirety of the Macro-Series is referenced in this comic without overpowering the issue. Mikey references the orphan's that he attempted to rescue in his series. Donatello's machinations come into play as Metalhead teams up with Agent Bishop. ​​ Raphael's capture and subsequent escape from the EPF fuels his motivations. The comic also makes subtle references to the deal that was struck between Leonardo and Karai for a truce between clan Hamato & The Foot. It's a very layered book. The art for the issue doesn't really jump at me. Because there isn't much action in this issue Michael doesn't get much to do other than set the table for the next arc. Nothing in the issue looks bad but its not the most exciting stuff without context.  more

All over the place. Poor TMNT could be one of the best comics out there but it has a hard time focusing...Art was fun and I loved the updated metal head but this was another another another Setup issue.

there were definitely very good moments in this issue, but the series really needs to streamline. too many characters and subplots going on at once, the story was all over the place. that’s a big problem. when a series has been built around also selling tie-in series. things become too convoluted. the most frustrating part is that the Turtles mostly just bickered among each other. there were parts that i really DID enjoy in this issue. it’s just not something i could confidently recommend to a friend. part of me really wishes the series would just wrap up. try to at least end it on a high note. end it before the continually dropping sales numbers lead to an eventual cancellation.
