Rom #1

Leave it to IDW to make what was old new again! REVOLUTION has more high points than low points, so far, and you can count ROM as one of the peaks. The story is as much about twists as it is about delivering a straightforward comic. It's unclear to what degree ROM's role will play in the bigger picture, or if he'll show up in other titles, but one thing is obvious, the creative team here is out to give us something to enjoy. If for whatever reason it's a shorter lived series than planned, readers will at least have a really exciting and fun story with high quality artwork worthy of your collections. ROM is for everybody! The Space Knight is back and so is the action! The stakes start high with the Dire Wraiths' infiltration higher than anyone suspected. The art is beautiful and dynamic with the sleek hero battling the grotesque Wraiths. A great beginning to please fans old and new. Congratulations, IDW! You've done this character right. Relax, Rom fanatics. The hero hasn't lost his touch despite being out of the limelight for so many years. This new series captures all the fun and charm of the classic '80s franchise, with just enough touches of real-world drama to give weight to Rom's never-ending battle with the Dire Wraiths. This series was made for sci-fi fans. Anyone who was a fan of the old series will enjoy seeing a classic character rebooted and new fans are going to love a unique story about freaking space knights! What's great about Rom #1 is that while it might initially start off looking like traditional fare, Ryall and Messina add in plenty of twists and turns to reward fans who are willing to take the leap. Given that the character of Rom looks pretty surface-level on paper, it's a testament to this creative team that they're able to give this character nuance on top of all the exciting action. Rom was never a series built over a single issue. The series took its time finding the weirdest and most interesting places to take its characters. IDW's new series builds promise with some serious art and some interesting twists on its classic premise. I can only hope the series gets weirder from here. Read Full Review

Another element of ROM #1 that needs to be discussed is the surprise ending. In it, Scarlet and Roadblock from G.I. Joe show up to discuss the alien threat that is ROM. Shared universes are a big trend now, and IDW has pulled together a number of former toy properties from Hasbro that will share one universe. Along with ROM and G.I. Joe, Transformers, Action Man, Micronauts, and M.A.S.K. will all inhabit the same story universe. IDW is leaning into this possibility, as a crossover series, Revolution, will take place in the fall. I worry that such a large crossover so early into a ROM series could take away from the world building, but its possible that it could also help develop the world of ROM. Read Full Review

I wasnt expecting a nostalgia-fest with ROM as I wasnt a massive fan back in the day. To be honest though, ROM could end up being a great book to get, nostalgia-aside, especially when IDW have their crossover event. If you're ROM-curious, Hasobro-curious or even just plain curious then this could be the comic for you. Otherwise its a presentable yet middling start. Read Full Review
