Comics Bulletin - Ray Tate
Aug 28, 2004Flare is a nice, professionally crafted super-hero comic book with a lot of personality. The writer and publisher also do not assume that the reader possesses encyclopedic knowledge regarding the estoerica of Flare's history. They provide a short summary between stories. Such is the skill of all involved, I didn't feel that I needed too many blanks filled, and most of the information is unnecessary for the enjoyment of the stories. It does deepen some of the interaction between the characters, and the lesson in Flare history is a welcome change from an arrogant belief that everybody should know, for example, that a magic lasso traditionally presented as being a tool of submission or a telekinetic prop is in some cases a supernatural lightning thrower.
