The Rise #1

The Rise #1 is a surprisingly great addition to the Living Dead Saga and a strong case for prequels on a story that many would have believed didnt need one. Romero is excellent as a storyteller here, and the creative team around him brings every page vividly to life. The Rise #1 is a solid comic. It does well to establish why this dangerous work is happening and hints as to the tragedy to come. It feels like a prequel to so many zombie stories though and not sure it really nails down Romero's father's work. But, it's still really good with a build-up of the tragedy we know will come. Romero, son of the director of the iconic film Night of the Living Dead, finally gives us the story before the worst night on Earth. This prequel horror story shows us the death, destruction and tragedy that led to the creation of one of the greatest zombie horror films of all time, Night of the Living Dead. I’m not so sure a movie as iconic as Night of the Living Dead needed a prequel story. It is a horror classic that still holds up decades after its release. A prequel story is now here and who better to write it than the son of its legendary director? This first issue sets the stage of the series as we are introduced to Dr. Cartwright. He is attempting to find a way to block out fear from the mind. However, this experiment will have complications that can lead to drastic consequences. This first issue does a good job to establish why this work is happening and foreshadows the tragedy to come. The highlight of this issue was the artwork. It was absolutely fantastic! It has a simple black and white color palette with subtle red color strategically used. I look forward to seeing how this story progresses.
