Red Sonja #0

It may be too early to call this new run of Red Sonjaa massive hit, yet the work both Chu and Gomez put into the book foreshadows really good things. This is a tale that I do not believe has been told with this character, and it seems refreshing and exciting. And with this issue only costing a whopping $.25 US (You read correctly. This only cost one-quarter of a dollar), it cannot be passed up. We are in a new age for Red Sonja, and I am happy to live in it. Read Full Review

All in all, this is a straight ahead Red Sonja meets 2016 tale and I can't wait to read the rest. As I've said; I'm kinda biased because I loved to read the old black and whitereprints of Conan. So take it for what you will.This is a book for anyone who misses the hack and slash of Conan, wherein ourhero is thrown into a bad situation andyou're along for the ride as she fights her way out. I enjoyed this book immensely. There is a sense of fun throughout, that may have been missing on previous runs. The art may attract controversy but you have to applaud Dynamite for possibly recognizing that certain characters do not need to be the implement to impact societal change. Some characters are just plain fun. After reading this new/old Sonja, I am hope that Dynamite continues with their apparent turnaround and you never know, this may indeed be the world for a half-dressed blood sucking sexy space vampire after all. Amy Chu looks to be a good choice as the new comic's writer (although I'm not quite sold on the premise). Carlos Comez's art is a little too cheesecake for me, but certainly fits in with the character's long comic history. And, for the price of a quarter, you can't complain too much. For fans. Honestly, after seeing Sonja being portrayed in Volume 3 as a truly inspirational figure with a sharp head on her shoulders and a complex moral compass, watching her being reduced to a confused, ditzy Victorias Secret model here is damn near heartbreaking. Exploitative artwork and a two or three-page story (at most) being dragged out to no less than eighteen pages makes this an utterly avoidable release, and while Im a big fan of some of Chus previous work, based on this underwhelming opening I honestly dont think Ill be back to see how this particular fish out of water tale pans out. At the price of twenty-five cents, Red Sonja #0 is over-priced. The story is unoriginal and the dialogue is as flat as Sonja herself is well-rounded. The artwork is mired in fan-service, made worse by Gomez's own limitations as an artist. Do not be persuaded to give this book a chance based on the low price. It is not worth it. Read Full Review

Everyone knows that part of the appeal of Red Sonja is the fanservice, well except for Marguerite Bennet, but I think even a title that is supposed to have fanservice can have too much, for its detriment.

That said, I'm curious to see how this will go... but off the bat, I'm liking it more than I ever liked Bennet's run... it's just a matter on whether I'll like this series more than I liked Simone's run.

I think some critics were unduly harsh on this issue. The artwork is lush, even if overly cheesecakey but as soon as the following issue, Gomez was scaling back the T&A on Amy Chu's orders. The plot was fine as a setup, even if Amy hadn't quite captured Sonja's voice yet with her mumbling about 'beasties'. It's not as good as Mark Russell's first issue but it's a welcome return to form after two lacklustre runs from Simone and Bennett.
