Red Sonja #100

Red Sonja #100 is what all anniversary issues should aspire to be like, as though there's nothing flashy within their tales, being fully detached from the ongoing series, they manage to capture the character's charm and energetic tone perfectly. It also acts as a great taster for fans that are unsure of the character, as though $7.99 may seem a pricey way of doing so, it beats feeling committed to a series that's not for you. All in all, this is a great representative sampling of stories about RED SONJA. For those who are not already fans, this is an excellent 'jumping in point.' The writing on all stories is fine and true both to the character and the era in which she existed. The artwork is excellent. Red Sonja #100 is a real treat with solid stories (some stronger than others, of course), good art, and plenty of moments of humor, action, adventure, and heart. If you're a fan then it's well worth checking out, and if you're new to the character, it might be a good place to get a sense of who she is. Also, if you get the chance, pick up the variant cover by Robert Hack. It's made to look like a cover from a 1980's issue of Red Sonja and even has a yellow price sticker drawn in the corner, as if you're picking it up from a sale bin. It's a very cool cover. I'm always happy to read more Sonja stories, but "Red Sonja" #100 doesn't have any standouts. Taken as a whole, it's a solid introduction to the character that will hopefully draw some readers' interest in her, but it isn't going to be one of my favorites to remember. Read Full Review

Roy Thomas really loves fantasy stories with mysterious towers in them. I found these stories petty bland and forgettable. It's nothing we haven't all read a thousand times before and if I am to re-read this book in a few weeks from now, I'm sure I'll have forgotten all of them. None of the stories are connected, they're just little shorts that I guess can be seen as character explorations. But we don't learn anything new about Sonja. I'd rather read Gail Simone's ongoing series than these stories.
