This is a series you're NOT going to want to miss. It's an incredibly strong start to what should be a fantastic series. If you haven't kept up with the other series that have come out, that's fine! Dynamite Comics' Gargoyles: Demona #1 is a phenomenal start to the new series, diving into the complex and intriguing backstory of the franchise’s most recognizable villain. Greg Weisman's story explores the events that shaped Demona into the character we know and love (or love to hate) from the 90s animated series. Weisman’s ability to continuously add new layers so organically to a world he’s been writing for decades is uncanny. The story takes us back to 1093, where Demona finds herself in Northumbria, an early medieval kingdom in England. The dual narrative structure, flipping between Demona's story and that of Canmore, a young prince looking to make a name for himself. As the two stories converge, the reader is treated to a gripping tale of survival, betrayal, and revenge. But even before that occurs, Weisman offers character breadcrumbs for the book’s titular character as she encounters a new clan of Gargoyles. Instead of feeling excitement upon meeting others like her, she immediately chastises them for their way of life. It reveals how much anger, grief, and jealousy is bubbling up underneath Demona’s stoic veneer. Frank Pavr's artwork is stunning, capturing the essence of the Gargoyles universe with ease. The lines are bold, the colors are vibrant, and the character designs are spot on. Robby Bevard's color work adds an extra layer of depth to the story, making each panel a feast for the eyes. Gargoyles: Demona #1 is an absolute must-read for fans of the franchise. With its engaging story and phenomenal artwork, this issue sets the stage for what's shaping up to be an incredible series. more
