Dejah Thoris #1 is the start of yet another series that I feel nailed what is needed to be invested in what this story has to offer. Great character development, plenty of new introductions, and provided a lot of potential towards exploration which should play a big role in what's to come. While there are times Dejah is drawn in a way that is clearly sexualizing her, this does not detract from what's happening, nor does it detract from the look in her eyes like she will totally murder you without hesitation if you get in her way. Qualano manages to find this balance between keeping her looking sexy but also strong and fearless. Plus, when she gets her armor she looks so freaking cool. Read Full Review

Dejah Thoris and the whole John Carter world continues to feel like there's a lot of enthusiasm from writers to be involved and it has a whole lot of potential but it has a hard time being fully realized. Amy Chu's story is a familiar one but it has plenty of that potential, especially if Dejah can be really brought to life as I think she's going to be able to, but exploring and explaining this world always feels like it's not something that's done well by most writers. That's an area that I'm hoping improves and that it allows Pasquale Qualano the chance to really stretch his wings a bit with some creative locations and creatures, particularly since he's got the character designs down so well so quickly here. Qualano’s art is a highlight of this issue and I hope to see himon the title for the foreseeable future. I can only describe his linework as “breezy” as it feels like everything is drawn effortlessly on the page. I’m curious to know if he has some kind of bet going on with someone else on the creative team to see how many different outfits he can come up with for Dejah (namely the headdress), as by my count, Dejah is at least 4 different outfits throughout the issue. The visuals are a deal breaker on this book. The story is good, the colors and letters fine, but the art relies too heavily on photographic insertion, leading to a bad 1950s sci-fi film feel. This is a shame, because Dejah has been handled so well in years past by Dynamite, but this is simply not doing this beloved princess justice. Read Full Review

Somehow I enjoyed the 0 issue, but not this one. All of the story elements were rather contrived and the art wasn't enough to save it. Nice covers at least.

I find it less interesting that the issue 0. I find Dejah a little too stubborn & ready to endanger now friend. I didn't like the Student & find some not well designed. When one die I see why the artist didn't spend more effort of him. At least Dejah is outside the palace on mars desert. Cover - Franck Cho Variant (love it) 1/2 Writing - The start was a little slow with some repetition. But I imagine that was for those who didn't take issue 0. 2/3 Arts - That do the job, but sometime a little lazy on character or settings. 2/3 Feelings - I didn't know if I will take the following issue. 0/2
