World's Finest #9

So another decent issue where the high points are the characterization and interaction between Huntress and Power Girl. Hydra or A.I.M.rejects storming this place and being driven off wasn't what grabbed me. It is Helena's personality and what she is willing to do that is the real hook. Hopefully all these crumbs that are being spread out by Levitz (Power Girl weakened by radiation, Huntress not effected, the Apokolips angle, etc) will be brought together soon. Read Full Review

Its nice to see an improvement in a title even if it is nothing major and more a tightening of things, the question here is what direction will it be brought and can the creative team use this as a launching pad to make this as good as it can be. Huntress is written really well again the first aim is to write Power Girl as well as Helena and take it from there and hopefully this will just be the beginning of the titles renaissance. This issue was average. It was not the worst I have read of this series, but certainly not the best either. I think that the story feels a bit more grounded which is important. This idea that there is a massive attack on Starr Island is a huge cause for concern, and it also opens up the doors for possible stories and ideas that Levitz could run with. I am actually interested in seeing what direction this story takes. Having said that, this issue does feel a bit inconsistent. The art especially fluctuates too frequently and makes the reading experience feel a bit jarring. There are some great pages of art, but there are also some pages that might leave you scratching your head. The action is good, and the story is well organized and makes more sense than many previous issues, but I am still having some difficulty with Power Girl's identity. I am beginning to wonder whether she is simply an empty shell of who she used to be, and that's discouraging. Read Full Review

Things do pick up in the end with the arrival of Power Girl and the reveal of who the thieves are actually working for. Although the prospect of Mr. Terrific showing up doesn't do much to excite me, it is a nice twist and it looks like the comic is finally ready to deal with Karen Starr's relationship to the hero whose pretty much disappeared from the New 52 since his book was cancelled. Worlds' Finest still has problems that are inherent in its concept. But reigniting the friendship between the two leads and focusing on character development, whilst still delivering an action orientated storyline shows that Levitz has the potential to do wonders with this book. All the artists do a great job; there are just too darn many of them. The constant shifting of styles fragments a story that doesn't have that much meat on the bone to begin with. One artist, a worthy foe, and more of the same interactions between the two leads should be the right formula to make Worlds' Finest a must-read. Read Full Review
