Wonder Woman #35

It's sad that Azzarello's and Chiang's time on WONDER WOMAN has come to an end. However, the conclusion is incredibly satisfying and a worthy wrap-up to this book. Without a doubt, this will go down as one of the best Wonder Woman stories of all time as well as one of the best stories to come out of the New 52. Everything just works well here, and it feels like it will work even better in a collected edition of this book. Hopefully, DC will put this story into an over-sized hardcover omnibus, most likely in two volumes. Anyway, this is an iconic run and it's a must read in the New 52. Make sure to check this out. Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang's final installment of Wonder Woman sticks the landing forthischaracter-defining run. Wonder Woman #35 is a fantastic conclusion to a run that will likely go down as one of, if not THE best the character has ever had. While short, it is still sweet, hitting all the right beats and giving fans the perfect cap to this mammoth tale. The Finches have a hell of a task ahead, having to follow this up. I can honestly say, this is the best conclusion to a series arc I've ever had the pleasure of reading. It's entertaining, dark, gruesome, and contains more emotion in a few simple sentences, than many other comics manage to achieve over multiple issues. I can't imagine anyone would dislike this, it has everything you could ever want in a comic book, but if they do" there's something seriously wrong with them. Nah, just kidding. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, it's my opinion that this is one of the best, if not the best issue of Wonder Woman the new 52 has produced. Read Full Review

Wonder Woman #35 speaks to humanity that you must keep with you at all times. Even in the face of trials that might demand of you to cast it away. That is what made Wonder Woman likable, and the entire supporting cast who stood by her side. Sure the fate of the rest is still up in the air, but what you see from all of them, start to finish is admirable. Absolutely everything about this finale was satisfying and brought together everything we've seen from issue #1 to now. Of course from such good collaborators there was almost no doubt that they were going to give us a grand finale. Strong characters, strong art, strong colours, strong ending. It’ll be sad to have such an able creative team move on, but they’ve set up Diana’s character and world building so well, that it’ll be interesting to see where Wonder Woman’s adventure takes her next. Wonder Woman #35, with Azzarello's skewed yet sweeping words and Chiang's glossy, classically-inspired pencils, finishes the long-range story of Diana of Paradise Island, newly minted God of War, and a whole new direction for the character. With the next issue of the title, the new husband/wife creative team of David and Meredith Finch will be bringing the character back into the fold, so to speak, of general DC continuity (and I wish them well), but here we get one last look at the Azzarello/Chiang Wonder Woman, in what could be the best run on the character since George Perez and Len Wein had hold of the Amazing Amazon back in the late 1980's. Brian Azzarello and his artistic collaborators have succeeded in giving one of DC's most essential characters a brand new lease on life. His epic story culminates beautifully with a strongly reinforced theme that calls to the core of Wonder Woman herself. The villains are dealt with, longstanding mysteries are resolved, and our titular character is celebrated in a clever and meaningful way. All of this is illustrated wonderfully by Cliff Chiang, who comes back to finish what he started three years ago. The only issues to be found is a missing of a majority of the supporting cast and a need for a more finalizing epilogue. Read Full Review

This is truly the end of an era. Wonder Woman hasn't been this great in years and it's sad to see it sail off into the sunset. Azzarello's and Chiang's was a monumental run in the annals of this revered character. One creative team remaining with one character (and remaining this consistently good) for three years doesn't happen in comics much these days, and DC's New52 output will only be poorer for its loss. The new creative team starting Wonder Woman on the next issue doesn't elicit much in the way of hope for this reader (which is funny, considering what a symbol of hope the character herself always has been), but there's some consolation to be found in this run's quality, its complexity, and ultimately, its completeness. I'll greatly miss Azzarello, Chiang and company on this title. It's been a fun ride, and this is a run on the title that years later will still be talked about as a definitive "Wonder Woman" era. But with all of that in mind -- I wish that their final issue had been as great as their overall overage, rather than just good. That feeling of incompleteness doesn't detract from Wonder Woman's strengths, but it does detract from the story. Wonder Woman #35 is presented as a culmination of so many plots and conflicts. While it does address the major plots, it negates many of the smaller sub-plots. It still finishes the story, but not only to the extent that it took the express lane in lieu of the more enjoyable scenic route. It's a story that has required Wonder Woman to utilize all her strengths for all the right reasons. As the story moves from the red heat of battle to cool blue of resolution, the true glory is owed to Matthew Wilson's phenomenal colors. As the dust settles and Diana stands tall, we are reminded that nobody makes a more beautiful Wonder Woman than the two of them. Satisfying conclusion to an excellent run. I will miss Cliff Chiang's exquisite art. Its distinct style has made Wonder Woman a unique book that has been on my pull list since issue 1 of the New 52. Azzarello and Chiang have crafted a book that will be recommended in years to come. I'll be honest and say that I previously have never cared much for a Wonder Woman book but the combination of Greek mythology with a splash of new age superheroes has made this book epic. I hope the new stand alone Wonder Woman movie will integrate elements of this New 52 run. There are a few interesting twists in this issue. I appreciate how Azzarello manages to show genuine human emotion in Wonder Woman although she is ultimately a god of Olympus.

Giving this issue a 10 seems to be the obvious choice, but it really deserves it as its own issue. 37 (counting the Villain's Month issue, as well as the Zero Month issue) issues, all telling a singular story. There were no 6 or 12 issue arcs in this series. It was just one story, from issue one until the end. And, as a conclusion three years in the making, this issue delivers on every count. Every character gets their proper conclusion, with no loose strings left behind. Azzarello gets Wonder Woman, I think that much is apparent. He understands how the character should be written, and how she should be portrayed. Add to that Chiang's artwork, which is able to showcase a powerful female character without reducing her to an object. This was not a story where things happened, and Wonder Woman was an element. This has been, from the beginning, a story about Diana and Wonder Woman. If you have not read this run, you need to do so. This issue specifically, and this run in general, comes highly recommended. more

The run was spectacular, but the finale did not hold up to the same level of quality. Last issue's cliffhanger turned out to be a red herring, a pivotal character was new to this issue so I did not particularly for her dilemma in the extremely important decision she made. How Diana's character development played into her fight with the First Born did not make complete sense, and the issue desperately needed an epilogue to show us the new status quo, for instance, who sits the Iron Throne. But the whole run is highly recommended. Since the beginning of the New 52, this has always been my favorite series behind Batman.

A bit muddled of an ending but this is more of a rating for the run as a whole. I really enjoyed it.
