Wonder Woman #210

The artwork by Drew Johnson, Ray Snyder and the Hories is pretty. The battle is well staged, but what makes this issue of Wonder Woman outstanding is the illusion of reality. That there are people out there that Wonder Woman protects and who in turn support her endeavors no matter how necessarily deadly they may become. Read Full Review

Regardless of these criticisms, this issue is a superb read. The aesthetic quality is daring and thought-provoking. The evocation of classical drama raises questions regarding fate, pride, and heroism. Is the ending just? Is the Hero merely a tool of Fate? Is free will an expression of hubris or can the Hero actively choose her destiny in accordance with wisdom? It is the underlying themes of this issue that make it such a powerful story. Still interesting: Dianas first technique to battling a Gorgon (Johnson has interestingly chosen to portray them as beautiful despite their stultifying gaze, and that includes old Snake Hair) is no surprise, but her second action is hard-core, and could have some lasting effects. J.G. Jones turns in another strong cover, perfectly capturing the Amazon in battle against a mythological menace. Read Full Review
