Wesley Dodds: The Sandman #4 is another excellent, pulp serial-inspired detective story in Robert Venditti's mini-series. Riley Rossmo's art oddities are still in effect, albeit toned down, but Rossmo's action choreography is improving. Ok so unlike some other books, I get why people rated this so highly. That opening. Those... what 6 splash pages back to back of Dodds experiencing his own sleeping gas for the fist time and what it was like. A unique horror of empathy. What a fitting thing for Dodds to unleash on the scum of humanity. With these splash pages Rossmo was in his element. Distorted dreams, bleeding blurry nightmares. This is where Rossmo excels. Post splash page sequences (amazing stuff again), the plot really picks up with Dodds on the move to find... and maybe accidentally kill his one lead. His plan is a massive escalation in character. This issue was on fire and Rossmo went hard. This had the oomph that issue 4 in a 6 issue series should have. The p acing is right on track for this series. It is wonderful. Please give it a read. more
