Theres so much going on in this issue, and we got a little extra for $2.99 because of it! Will this attract new readers? I don't know. Can there be anyone in the world who isn't aware of Superman? How do you attract new readers to something so famous and iconic? I don't know, that's why I'm a teacher and not working in the comic book industry. I have no doubt that many people will return to reading Superman though, those who were not as foolish as me and ditched Grounded, will hopefully find most of what was lacking in Grounded just in this first issue. I have high hopes for this ongoing story and I can't express how pleased I am to see the real Superman back doing what he does best. Read Full Review

Once again American Alien has maintained its place as one of my favorite series coming out of DC. To write this review is incredibly difficult because part of me wants to write about the series so far when I need to focus on a single issue. Number four unlike other issues seemed to focus more on bringing other characters to the light and showing us how some of Clark's relationships would develop in the future. I enjoyed this issue each time I read it just like I've enjoyed each issue previous to it. The one page comic of Parasites origin illustrated by Steve Dillon was wonderful and my favorite so far. If you haven't read the previous issues you're really missing out on an excellent series. Read Full Review

Jesus Merino does a good job handling Perez breakdowns. He seems to be channeling Mark Bagley throughout the book and I don't mind that. I just hope we don't have an angsty moping alienated Superman right out of the gates. Read Full Review

My one real complaint is Clark's "article," which runs through the issue as a commentary on Superman's activity. It's" it's just terribly written. It's "failing journalism 101" writing. No award-winning journalist could " or should " get away with a front-page article so rife with speculation and obvious bias. Yes, I know they do, all the damn time, but that doesn't make it right. Anyway, Jesus Merino has run with Superman before, but this time he's running finishes over George Perez layouts, and that's a formula for awesome. This title hasn't looked anywhere near this good in a very long time. It's a real shame that we already know Perez is going to leave after six issues, but I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this team as long as they're here. Read Full Review

All in all, it's a start, and a solid one. At least he didn't get bloodied and beat up, but that can't be to far along if my pattern recognition is what I believe it is. The big question: Was all of this necessary, to tell these stories? Read Full Review

Overall though, the book offers up some potential with it, but it doesn't spend its time clearly with one direction and voice to tell a tale. It's covering so much here, and with the additional pages (27 digital compared to the usual 21-22), it's almost a bit too dense and overloaded which feels weird to say. And that's without any double page spreads too, which is a surprise. In the end though, I'm just not sure how I feel about this yet as a whole. Something just feels a bit off. Read Full Review

It worked in the movies, at least the ones with Christopher Reeve, because of Reeve and the rest of the cast of amusing character actors. And Supes is fine as a team player, whether with the Legion or the Justice League or whoever he's helping out. But alone, being the perfect guy who never actually gets what he really wants? The art was fitting for a Superman comic yet still made it clear that this Superman is a little younger than the one we've been reading prior to 'The New 52.' The first issue is pretty dark (literally as it takes place at night) and Buccellato's colors really enhance Superman's new costume (which I'm still on the fence over). I would have preferred a bigger villain for the first issue but the tease at the end for next issue sounds like it's going to be some old school fun. Read Full Review

As I say, good comics come from good creators telling good stories, not from corporate imperatives toward change, and in the end, Perez and Merino understand that, basically, old-school Superman was never broke and, commercial considerations aside, really didn't need fixing. Read Full Review

After a month and numerous appearances, it's disappointing to see Superman #1 so detached from its main character. If Perez can achieve the focus that he brought to the final scene of this issue and allows Merino to loosen up a bit, Superman can be on his way to something new and different. Although I wasn't a fan of this issue at all, I will say this: the ending was done extremely well. Theconclusion gave me hope that there is still a chance to get to see more of what I came here to see: a comic that revolves around Superman and his thoughts and feelings. If George Perez can manage to calm down with his script and let the artist tell some of the story, then Superman can definitely become a series worth checking out. The story is interesting and it seems clear that the creators are putting a lot of effort into making these 20 pages a worthwhile reading experience. Unfortunately, Perez's writing chops are nowhere near as strong as his pencils. A good editor could probably spend a good chunk of time trying to mold him into a more competent scripter. But, with so many brilliant writers in the world of comics, I have to wonder why DC Comics would set up a living legend to fail. Superman #1 barely earns 2 out of 5 stars. Read Full Review
