Overall, Superman looks to be a series worth continuing to pick up monthly as Mon Els adjustment to Earth, his new secret identity, and his exploits as Metropolis resident superhero guardian will prove interesting. To add to Lois comment at the end of the tale proper in regards to Clark/Supermanjust come back to me, lets hope soon as well. Read Full Review

As we move ahead into 2009, the Superman books are finally settling down and consolidating characters and plotlines. As I said, I don't agree with a lot of what is being done. Certainly, removing Superman from these books is about the most counter-intuitive move I can imagine. At the very least, though, issues like Superman #685 prove this new direction has potential. Everything might just be alright for Superman readers after all. Read Full Review

The only other thing worth touching on in this review is the cool use of Alex Ross' classic cover. Once you've read the entire issue you will notice that the image of Superman holding Jonathan Kent while he's dying takes on new meaning with the reveal of Mon-El's new secret identity. Pretty cool little twist on the meaning of the cover if you ask me. Truly a case of a comic using an iconic image to foreshadow the contents of the issue without explicitly showing what happens. Well, like coach always said, keep running that play 'til you get it right. Perhaps DC will keep running off their "big three" characters until readers get tired of looking for them. Read Full Review

Ironically, it's the back-up "Origins & Omens" feature where things click into place. Robinson and former "X-Factor" artist Pablo Raimondi set up what's to come as they focus more on Mon-El's new situation and status quo. It's a fun little story, and I couldn't help but feel like more happened here than in the entire main feature. I'm glad it came at the end of "Superman" #685, because it not only closes the issue out on a good note, but it makes me excited and interested again about next month's Super-books. It's just too bad the entire comic hadn't managed that. Read Full Review
