Don't miss the start of this new miniseries set in the world of Wonder Woman from writer/actor Kevin Grevioux (New Warriors, Underworld). Years before the birth of Princess Diana, a group of Amazons set out on a globe-spanning quest to find others of their kind, encountering legendary creatures and beings along the way. But their journey soon turns into a rescue mission as two of their own are captured by the legendary Storm Giants of Norse mythology. It's up to their leader, the stalwart Hessia, to keep them together through the many trials that lie ahead. RATED T

Grevioux and Benjamin set the bar very high in their first issue for this series, then did a one-arm pull-up on the bar like it's nothing. If the creative team keeps pumping out work with this great formula of pacing, action, engagement, and world building then a miniseries ain't going to be enough. We're going to need a volume 2, ASAP. Odyssey of the Amazons #1 has promise, though so much happened in this first issue of the miniseries that I have no clue where its going. Some of the elements of the story lend to great twists in later installments, but I worry what is going to be the end of the line considering how few characters it feels we have left. There are major pluses in the diversity of the women, their leadership, and the attention paid to their design, while the reduction of characters and some minor issues in illustration may affect the story. Odyssey is worth a try, and, if nothing else, its nice to see Amazons in their own element. Read Full Review

The early confidence that Odyssey of the Amazons #1 has to leave the Amazon in such dire straits has me excited to see how Grevioux will write them out in issue #2. Read Full Review

It isn't like Odyssey Of The Amazons #1 is bad, it's more a case of being its own worst enemy. The art is good, and if the writing had a lighter touch then it would have flowed better. Unfortunately, it results in an issue which feels more like an unrewarding effort to read, as opposed to an enjoyable saga. Read Full Review

Writer Kevin Grevioux excels at capturing the mythological tone of stories like The Odyssey and The Iliad, even directly referencing Homer's prose in the opening panels. But while the omniscient narration works well during battle, the middle act of the issue would have benefited from a lighter touch. Read Full Review

When Odyssey of the Amazons most consciously emulates classical sources, whether Homer himself or even classic comics, it's often to rousing success. Where it regresses to a more modern mindset " in the low prose of its middle section or its novel portrayal of the Moirai " the work often suffers, save solely for its global-scope and cosmopolitan cast. Ultimately, the concept of a mythological expedition in the style and structure of ancient epics and set in the DC universe is an absolutely inspired idea worthy of better writing and art than is found here. At their best, both Benjamin and Grevioux rise to the occasion of this premise, but fail to maintain that greatness consistently throughout. Read Full Review

The juxtaposition of multiple mythologies provide Grevioux with a world of adventure to explore that looks to earn the Odyssey in the title. This first issue is successful in investing the reader in these characters. While there is not a strong tie to any of DC's existing story lines, this stand alone adventure may prove to be a journey worth taking. Read Full Review

The dialog as well as narrative can be a bit disjointed at times. Despite that, the character motivation is pretty well established, which is commendable. The main problem I have with this comic is that it is a "historical" story about the Amazons. Wonder Woman and the Amazons have had many ret-cons over the years... some I have loved like The Legend of Wonder Woman and some I haven't (Earth One Wonder Woman). The story can change, but it has to be grounded in history. It has to take place in a specific time or place. Read Full Review

Odyssey of the Amazons‘ first issue is a lot of small details that add up to make a stumbling first issue. Death by thousand details. A different “voice” in how the story is presented and going all in with a fantastical world would have benefited greatly. I looked forward to the first issue, now I'm a bit nervous about the second. This book was good, but it felt like it took me days to readit, but it did leave me wanting more from this story. The creative team did aGREAT job, and my favorite part of this entire issue was the dialogue boxesthat look like old parchment. Personally I didn't know what to expect whencoming into this book, the only thing I remember hearing about it was that itwasn't a Wonder Woman story. I didn't expect to open this up to war, but I didenjoy all the action sequences in this book. Read Full Review

While the art is good and there are some good ideas, the issue falls flat. The story isn't interesting enough and the characters are very forgettable and interchangeable. Ultimately, this was a boring read. I don't recommend checking it out. Read Full Review

    The Beat - Kyle Pinion

Odyssey of the Amazons, in an attempt to strike that sort of cinematic "epic" tone, utilizes narration to tell you exactly what's happening as its happening. In cinema, this works because exposition is required to catch you up and its usually done in a sparing fashion. But in this initial issue, more than half of the panels contain this omniscient narration filled to the brim with purple prose. It's as if the script doesn't trust Ryan Benjamin to be able to translate the story visually without these text boxes telling you exactly what's happening as it happens. Read Full Review
