New Suicide Squad #10

Part of the appeal in this change-up for Suicide Squad is how it engages us visually. This has been less of action and more personal than usual. With Reverse Flash, there was something human to him underneath that freak-ish appearance. You could see someone who was actually baffled by the idea that these others who are working to shave time off of their sentences aren't looking for a positive change. It should be mentioned the appreciation for Harley to be seen with the costume she wears in her solo series. These shouldn't come off as two different Harley's in the same world. Then you have the other half of the story with Boomerang, Black Manta, and Deadshot that is also a bit more personal because we are seeing them more without their full costumes. Waller herself even reveals a side we haven't quite seen. Instead of seeing her normally barking commands and witty retorts at the Squad, she instead releases her defeated disappointment in Bonnie. Bonnie takes Sage around a tour of the prison operations, fully expressing her naivety. Waller has to flat out ask her, "when are you going to realize how awful everyone is? Read Full Review

While I really liked how Sean Ryan is fleshing out Boomerang, this issue was mainly setup.  There are some interesting things presented this month, but the reader will have to come back to see how all of it plays out.  The art was workmanlike, but I think it was due to the nature of the issue, not the skill of the team.  I am still up for this arc, but this issue was only a little better than middle of the road. Although New Suicide Squad is in its strongest arc yet, as long as Sean Ryan is writing this book, it will not reach its full potential. I'm sure Sean Ryan could be a great writer for one of DC's titles, but New Suicide Squad isn't that title, so unless you're a loyalist, I'd advise you support other books that deserve more support. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the direction of this series right now. The idea of the Squad being tasked with infiltrating a League of Assassins splinter group is sound, as is the notion that some members find their new life preferable to the old. But in many ways, the execution isn't where it needs to be. Read Full Review
