Justice League of America: Vixen Rebirth #1

It sums up the character nicely without falling down any rabbit holes and even folds in the possibilities introduced in the Legends of Tomorrow show. Most importantly, it sets Vixen up for a whole new world of adventure. Intentional or not, Orlando and Houser have made Vixen the JLA parallel to Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She's the high profile member of the group and looks ready to blend celebrity with cause, power with profile. And it's about damn time. Read Full Review

I wasn't a fan of this character before, but now I am. If Vixen continues to appear with the quality of story and visuals, I'm going to have one more book to collect each month. An excellent rebirth that should be picked up. Read Full Review

I've always liked when the JLA had less recognizable characters, showing that the group was greater than the sum of its parts, and Vixen should be a great addition. I love one-shots in general, and at just $2.99 it's definitely worth the pick-up. Read Full Review

While not as strong as the Atom special for me, the Vixen special does a lot to establish the character and make her accessible while giving her an interesting if familiar path forward. She's got a lot behind her that can be utilized in ongoing adventures with the JLA thanks to her business and social media side and there's a lot to like in the use of her abilities here. She's just a very real and grounded character in a lot of ways, even with her present self initially being so aloof and distant because of her work. That connection to her origins is what will drive her forward. The team did a really good job here and the artwork from Campbell is exceptionally solid, helping to boost up the grade for this a good bit more because it captures so much so well. Read Full Review

Seeing Mari back in the swing of things in this special was great. They got ya girl looking fresh to afterlife for 2017 and apparently a spot with the JLA. This was definitely a great gateway addiction to get us fiending for the future of Mari. Read Full Review

I enjoyed Jamal Campbells Vixen. She is black. Unlike the X-Mens Storm who seem to become paler by the day, having gained blue eyes a while back, Vixen cannot be mistaken for a white woman with slightly darker skin. She is totally black and beautiful! Campbell, by the way is a great colourist and probably being black himself, avoids the black palm problem that plagues many comic book colourists work. It's unfortunate that Orlando and Houser couldn't quite make Mari connect with the reader in this condensed story. Even within the issue, other characters complain about Vixen being too emotionally remote, and it's not a problem that was solved here. Regardless, the artwork is definitely worth checking out. While you'll get all the information you need to get a basic idea of the character, this one-shot comes off really rushed to get us there without ever really giving a reason that's believable to why Vixen would even become the hero that she is.  It's not a bad issue though and it allows you to understand her power set and I like the art a lot here, but overall I found myself wishing that we just got a little more. Ultimately, your enjoyment of this issue is going to boil down to your prior familiarity with the character. If you know the deal with Vixen, theres not a huge amount of new material here, although its worth mentioning that the artwork in the second half of the issue is probably worth the cover price on its own, that splash page in particular. If nothing else, its clear that Orlando and Houser have a firm grasp on the character, which is going to make her inclusion in the JLA all the more interesting. Overall, I quite enjoyed this issue. Its a stark contrast to last weeks Rebirth offering, so maybe I went into it with a major blow to my expectations. Its flawed, yes, but there are some solid ideas here, and Orlando presents a character I may be interested in reading more of. Read Full Review

Vixen is in good hands here. Even if her story is rushed in places and rather familiar to anyone who has spent time with the character, Hauser, Orlando, and Campbell make Vixen's introduction to DC Rebirth a considered and potent one. The limitations of the intended goal strangle this story a little but thoughtful writing and beautiful artwork make this an enjoyable read. If DC allows Orlando and co. to expand on the foundation established here, Vixen could finally have her day. Read Full Review

If you're looking forward to the upcoming JLA series, this one-shot should be on your to-read list. Vixen was definitely relegated to obscurity during New 52, which should've been a crime given the character's interesting background. In all honesty, if they existed in the same universe, T'Challa would probably never have married Ororo. The two have so much in common. Anyways, this issue brings us up to speed with Mari. And whether you're new to the character or have known of her since Bruce Timm's Justice League Unlimited series, you know her well by the end (yup growing up in the 90's was awesome, sorry you kids are now stuck with Adventure Time and Regular Show). The story isn't as linear as last week's Atom but given the fact that she's already a well-known model giving interviews by the time she's a seasoned superhero, flashbacks are a necessary evil to tell her story. At the conclusion, I am excited to see how she will fit in with the JLA which means the one-shot did its job. Also I give this book a higher score because Jamaal Campbell's art is beautiful and it's nice to see him do something other than draw covers for the Power Rangers. Kudos. more

Vixen is a great oneshot that tells the story of a hero that has received more mainstream success in recent years. The issue featured good art, with a story that provides a powerful motive behind Vixen's super heroism. I will be very interested in seeing how she interacts with the other JLA team members.

Its a good intro to the character albeit rushed. The previous one-shot, Atom, benefited from have its story told chronologically, this one takes the flashback approach. That said, Mari Mcabe is a likable and cool character and I look forward to see her in JLA.

What a pleasant surprise...I picked this issue up (like most, I'm willing to wager) in anticipation of the upcoming JLA book. Vixen has NEVER been a favorite character of mine. In fact, I've always, rather, disliked her. If JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA: VIXEN - REBIRTH is an indication of what we can expect of Vixen, going forward, I may have to change my opinion. This wasn't, by any means, a perfect comic but it WAS a good combination of story+art+writing that made for an excellent read. Of particular note is the art by Jamal Campbell. I'm not very familiar with Mr. Campbell's work. If I've seen it elsewhere I couldn't say. In and of itself, his art is good..not great...but teeming with potential. His art, especially his color-work , shines every time Vixen uses her power (nice effects). While not a"MUST READ", I'd, recommend this issue if you are a Vixen fan or, like me, want a little peek into what to expect from the, upcoming, JLA book. SCORE: 8.2 more
