Justice League of America #17

Justice League of America #17 is a good read. It's fast paced, full of action, and Ray Palmer in the end passes down the title of the Atom to Ryan, who is a very worthy successor. Going back to the beginning of the series in JLA, Ryan was very unsure of himself and his role. Now he's finally become confident of himself and his abilities and this issue did a great job of showing that. Read Full Review

I enjoyed this Microverse arc a good bit overall and I even liked the little expanded detours that we got to flesh it out more than it might have otherwise. This installment wraps it all up while showing a bit more of the bigger picture going back to the original Rebirth special so it served a purpose but didn't reveal as much as some might have hoped. The main takeaway is getting Ryan elevated a bit more as the Atom and I especially liked the additional bit with Caitlin as it all serves to make both of them more interesting. There are a few drawn out pieces and the science of it all just left me feeling kind of bleah about the whole thing but I'm glad with how it ended and that it all felt wrapped up enough for me to abandon the title from here on out and try something else instead. I know a number of people really didnt care for this storyline. I can understand that, it did drag at times, but now that the overall purpose behind it is clear, I feel it was time well spent. Ryan Choi proved worthy of adopting the role of the Atom, and considering that Ray Palmer is not returning in any active capacity, the length of this tale gave the readers time to see what his life has become. Orlando is a guy really gifted at weaving some interesting story structures, and while Null and the Microverse fell a little below my personal standards of interest, it's a story that'll surely blaze by in the trade. Even though Justice League of America #17 ended up being mostly okay, I still wouldn't really recommend it. It's not an especially great issue, and it does nothing to counteract the mediocrity of the rest of this arc and, really, the series as a whole. Plus, the teaser for the next one doesn't make it seem like it's going to be all that good either. Maybe it's the mention of the Might Beyond the Mirror and her involvement with it, or maybe it's that "showing the hypocrisy of Justice" isn't an interesting idea. Orlando stepped up his storytelling game with Panic in the Microverse, but he still has a lot of room to grow in regards to writing for an ensemble cast. The bones of the story itself were solid, he just needs to find his characters voices, which I suppose will come with time. He seems to be building towards an arc featuring more characters he has utilized in past books, so maybe that will bring a level of comfort to the title that I feel has been missing the past few arcs. I found that this story was much less of a finale, but a transition to a different Atom Character. It featured very little of other characters and was pretty boring. The saving Grace was that I absolutely love Ivan Reis's artwork. Read Full Review

Justice League of America #17 is a frustrating conclusion to "Panic in the Microverse." Most of the story is wrapped up using exposition, coupled with poor dialogue. To make matters worse, when all is said and done, this story doesn't matter. It serves no purpose in the grand scheme of things. What should have been one of Rebirth's greatest moments, is easily one of it's worse! If you jumped back on to the JLA book because I urged you to early in "Panic in the Microverse," then I apologize. This story clearly wasn't worth your time like I thought it would be. Don't know why this arc got such a critical bad rap. It has been really exciting and featured great art by Reis and Watanabe. I still can't stand Lobo, but Orlando created an interesting villain and gave the story an epic scope. The book sucked before this arc, esoecially in the art department but this was a return to form.

This arc should have been more epic than it was, but I liked it. It was cool seeing Dr Manhattans hand at moment he stoled 10 years from DCU. Bummed the real Atom being replaced by Choi. It seems like Ray's story not over yet as Batman wants him to look into things in the microverse so maybe he''lll be in doomsday clock.

This title is still struggling to find its footing and after eight and half months, it's worrisome. This arc pushes some loose threads along that we got from Rebirth one-shot but it doesn't resolve anything besides passing the Atom's mantle to Choi. If I'm honest Rebirth is losing some steam storytelling-wise and there are a few titles that I think should end if they don't know what they're going to do with it. Superwoman is already slated to end January and Blue Beetle is rumored to end soon as well. While DC Rebirth isn't in trouble per se, they should work harder in writing some better focused stories to maintain the momentum they built since Rebirth started.
