Green Lantern Corps #63

Overall, I'm very bummed this is the last issue, but unlike a couple of other final issues I've read from DC this month, this one is actually a good read, and it doesn't feel like a throw-away issue. The writing, by Scott Kolins, is great and he has a good grasp of the characters, but overall, the Kyle Rayner story is by far the best. I recommend this issue, but I can't say you NEED this in your collection. It's a nice send-off for the series, but it leaves you wanting more, which, in this continuity, we will never get. Green Lantern Corps 63 puts an open-ended cap on the 63 issue series by leaving some questions for the next volume. Will the tensions between human and alien Lantern become and issue? How does Boodikka work into the future of the team and will they be attacked while weak from so many quitting? Granted, I’m not sure how all of that will work within the “five year” reboot timeline. That entire timeline idea resets the reality of the DCU, so how the Green Lantern story just continues on the same is a mystery to me. Joe Prado, Daniel HDR and Kolins himself all do solid work. The odd man out here is Freddie Williams II, whose chapter shifts drastically from the traditional look of the other chapters to more of a painted feel. To be fair, this is some of the best work Williams has done in quite some time (as people who remember his somewhat underwhelming run on Flash will attest), but the look stands in terribly stark contrast to the rest of the book. I rather wish either the whole book had been done in this style, or none of it. It's nice to see this title end with the Corps as a whole. Green Lantern Corps #63 is a step up from the last few issues in this series. It might not be the epic send-off we were hoping for, but at least it delivers a moral that explains what the Green Lantern Corps is all about: they are always around, through thick and thin, to help those in need. Some appreciable art and a few storytelling choices that are ambitious if nothing else, and we finally get a Kolins issue that isn't completely not worth your time"just enough for a brief skim in the shop, nothing more. Read Full Review

Green Lantern Corps has been a solid read for a long, long time. This book simply should have ended with issue 62. It seems like this book had some ideas but they weren't shaped into a cohesive story. Was it a rush job? Perhaps but either way this is a skip-able book. Read Full Review

Overall though, this is another disappointing final issue, with not a lot of merit. I was going to give an extra point for Kirkham and Batts excellent cover, but as half of the important characters on said cover never appear in the comic (Ganthet, John, Soranik) Im not going to. Read Full Review
