Green Lantern #9

You want answers? This issue has answers. Hopefully you'll be prepared for them and can handle them all. It's almost crazy how it feels all the stops are bing pulled. There's still one more part to this arc yet big things are happening. The team of Johns, Mahnke and Sinclair (along with an army of inkers) makes this such a great and fun comic to read each month. As if the revelations weren't enough, we also see another crazy move by the Guardians. It's no surprise why this is my favorite Green Lantern title month after month. Read Full Review

Fortunately, the final pages are so epic, the quick lead-in soon turns from a curse to a blessing. Apparently, Abin Sur knew pretty much goddamn everything, as he's the one - we are now constantly being reminded - who knew the Guardians were bad news from the get-go. As Natromo hears of Abin Sur's death, he decides to destroy the indigo battery and end the Indigo Tribe project he started with Abin Sur all those years ago. The good news is that Sinestro is freed and becomes a Green Lantern once again, the bad news is that the worst criminals in the universe are now all in one place, with two giant green targets with which to play. The pacing of the issue is near perfect with not a single panel wasted. If Johns and company can keep the storytelling this intriguing, I think the series will only get better and better leading to the cryptic "Third Army." While the character balance still isn't quite there, Green Lantern is still improving by leaps and bounds every month, and might be my favorite DC book of the week. (Yep, even including Batman.) At the end of the day, Johns proves that he knows how to structure a universe with its own history and its own rules, and it's that sureness of mythology that makes Green Lantern #9 a treat to read. Despite the not-quite-perfect execution of this installment, Johns gets props for continuing to provide more layers to one of DC's most consistent and entertaining comics. He never ceases to create a powerful emotional connection between characters, or shed new light on old prophecies that turn the Lantern universe on its head. The mythology is always transforming into something bigger and better, and given the destruction of the Red and Yellow Corps in addition to what happens here, it looks like all the Lanterns are in for their biggest shakeup yet. The secret of the Indigo Tribe is out, and now we have to deal with the aftermath. Geoff Johns has built up the mystery of the Indigos for a while, and now that we have all of the details, it's clear that this has been a long time coming. Promising to dovetail straight into the next arc, the Revenge of Black Hand, the Secret of the Indigo Tribe delivers ring-slinging action, answers to long-standing questions, and even some surprises along the way. Green Lantern's ninth issue is another superb entry in Geoff Johns' run and while the ending seems rushed and the way we learn of the origins of the Indigo Tribe seemed a bit contrived, it's still a great read full of speculation fodder and shocking revelations of a galactic scale worthy of being part of a crossover event.  The Green Lantern books are heading for a crossroads and in this issue lies some key pieces of the puzzle that the creators have been building for some time.  Four out of five lanterns. Of course it's hard to recommend this book to new readers. The book just isn't in that place. If you're at all enticed by this review but haven't read any of Johns' run on Green Lantern, pick up a copy of Rebirth and work your way on from there. Oh, and enjoy the ride. Read Full Review

I would have liked to have gotten the Indigo Tribe backstory a couple of issues back (or even way back when the group was first introduced well before the New 52 reboot). The introduction of the Guardians as the universe's greatest threat opens up several new possibilities and alliances. The idea of making a remorseful army of the worst creatures in the galaxy is an intriguing one. However, it has one major flaw which Hal Jordan stares both Hal and Sinestro down in the comic's final panel. Worth a look. Read Full Review

GL 9 reveals that Abin Sur, along with Narmoto, founded the Indigo Tribe to give the Guardians compassion before they replace the Green Lanterns. Excellent issue and Mahnke’s art is fabulous
