Poorly executed stories hurt me, and they hurt even more when you can see their potential right on the page. DETECTIVE COMICS takes place in a worldripe for good cop stories, but it's playing more as just sidequests in the greater BATMAN story. That said, this arc of DETECTIVE COMICS is over, so with the solid foundation in place, we can look forward to what comes next, even if we arevery cautiously optimistic. Read Full Review

This finale felt rushed and forced which is a shame because I have really enjoyed Buccellato's (and Manapul's) run on Detective Comics.  Everything is wrapped up and ready for Peter J. Tomasi to take over next month, but after the slow burn that lead to this issue, everything ends too quickly.  What made me more upset is that we are left with just as many questions as we get answers and I doubt we will ever get the proper closure this story deserves.  Overall, I really enjoyed this run, just not it's final issue. Detective Comics #44 sees the end of the series' first arc since Convergence ended, and although I will miss the creative mind of Brian Buccellato, a part of me feels that we need a new writer. That being said we got a fairly solid conclusion to our tale, that's well worth picking up, despite its flaws. Read Full Review

The Joker robot's King Kong styled rampage is where we slide back into hokey territory, but everything around this kind of needless spectacle is pretty solid. The B-Plot, centering on Bullock trying to stop Falcone from targeting cops at the circus, is much more interesting. But this presents a similar problem to last month as Batman is once again the most uninteresting thing in his own issue. That could, however, simply be a testament to the strength of the supporting cast and the GCPD crew who usually play second-fiddle. Read Full Review

"Detective Comics" #44 ultimately ends with less of a bang and more of a muffled noise. It looks nice and there are a few genuinely amusing parts, like the scorn heaped on Joker's Daughter and a moment where Bullock and Montoya's new car is a SmartCar. Ultimately, however, there's little-to-no suspense in a book that seems to try and build it up and, in doing so, it just never rises to the heights it otherwise could. Read Full Review

This issue marks the end of the Brian Buccellato/Francis Manapul run on Detective Comics. Of the 16 issues that they contributed to, there was always far more good than bad. It's just unfortunate that they had to depart on such a low note that this final 4 parter turned out to be without ever having really stuck a landing. I shall look back on their run with some fond memories, but this last arc definitely won't be one of them. It's just not the kind of story that people will be talking about years from now, maybe not even by next week. Instead of going out with a bang, it just putters to a close. Read Full Review
