With a last page surprise guest that no Giffen fan will want to miss out on, Supergirl: Matrix #1 is a packed issue for anyone looking for a bit of fun in their reading this week. Ambush Bug makes his first, actual, reappearance in years under Giffens pen and Green IIs art captures him amazingly. Giffen also makes him one of the highlights of the issue. Theres really one badly done thing in the issue – and its due to one page having all of the text bubbles mismatched. If youve read it already you know. Its definitely a shame and stalls the issue.Yet, other than that, its a fantastic start and I cant wait to see how it wraps up. Read Full Review

Those looking for a serious comic can go elsewhere. However, if you're looking for some vintage Giffen humor (and a surprise Giffen character at the end of the comic that all but promises even more silliness to come next month), this is the comic for you. I have talked about the art ... slick and stylish with vivid colors by Hi-Fi. But I think the lasting feeling for me was this Supergirl being verbally skewered by Lex and simply taking it. Maybe we'll see her toss of the shackles next issue. Read Full Review

As opposed to capturing something fun from the past, this issue caught something undesirable. Certainly the past of comics has a lot of great stories which have been told, but there are also a lot of stories which should remain stuck in some back issue bin, and this unfortunately captures that essence above all else. It is reminiscent of the 1980s, when comics got a bit darker, but some responded with an attempt at humor for heroes, most of which fell flat. The humor in this issue is mostly a misfire, the heroes feel out of place, the plot unnecessary to the overall story of Convergence, and all that this issue manages to capture from the past is that it too should probably be buried in a back issue bin. Please believe me when I tell you that I'm a big fan of nonsensical fun.  I really am, but while this issue is full of just that, in the scheme of the Convergence Event, it felt off.  I wish I could recommend this issue, but as it stands, I cannot.  Unless yo9u are a huge Giffen fan or want everything involving Lord Volt (or maybe the other characters involved), you can pass on this issue. This is the first real disappointment within convergence for me. While I love Giffen's humor, and the art is really quite serviceable , this would have been a much better issue if the characters featured in it were Booster Gold and Blue Beetle instead of Matrix and Lex Jr. This issue implies that they would have been pulled from the timeline after Superman was killed but before he was resurrected. And I may only have been about seven years old while the whole "they saved Lex Luthor's brain" story arc was going on. but really, this is not the characterization I've ever seen of Lex Jr. He doted on Matrix, despite hiring her as his bodyguard, he was protective of her. He was almost courting her. He may have even infantilized her. But he did not ever berate her as he is portrayed as doing during this issue. And it's painful. In the face of the industry feeling the need to step up their game in positive representation of women in comic books, this is a complete step backwards for a character that was fairly well represented in her day. I won't be reading #2. more
