City Boy #5

This started out as an intriguing tale of a new metahuman, but developed into one of the most interesting takes on childhood trauma and recovery I've read in a while. It feels a little rushed, because the end of this issue reminds us that there's still a main villain to deal with and only one issue to do it in. But much like its fellow books to debut this month, The Vigil and Spirit World, the only flaw they have is with a little too much ambition. This book for me keeps chugging away at pretty much solid 8s. That feels like the type of book it is. As for the actual content, we get great character development for City Boy as we learn a lot of what he is not (which leads to more questions but good ones, ones you want to have for a character to grow and have a future). We also learn the fate of his mother but that doesnt help him at all. Swamp Thing was great in this issue. The single joke he makes is pretty on-point to. This mini-series feels like a deep character dive where each issue City Boy meets up with another person to help him slowly find out who he is as a person. I feel like in the end, City Boy will be a great mini-series to introduce this character, his power set and his mindset as a hero/possibly anti-hero. more
