Batman: Eternal #31 runs into the usual problems...slow pacing, too many storylines and not enough resolution.  However ,Ray Fawkes gives the reader some great moments and Fernando Pasarin's art is really good.  In an up and down book, you can file this issue in the up category. Read Full Review

BATMAN ETERNAL continues building momentum well past its halfway point. While not every issue is killer, theyre all at least solid and great at continuing to build the characters and storylines that continue to grow apart and come together at the most unexpected points. Its a series that constantly keeps the reader guessing, but also keeps them thinking as its not difficult to follow, but it can get a bit labyrinthine with a cast this size, so maybe a staff this size is the only natural reaction. This was a really fun, fast paced issue with great Alfred action. This is an issue that can easily be read alone or in the context of the overall story. This is a good issue to pick up if youve been wondering about this title. It wont be hard to figure out whats going on. Its easy to feel the momentum building with this issue. That problem is the pacing. Fawkes decides to shine some light on Spoiler ever once and a while in this issue, and while it does set up the big finale of the Hush storyline, it also derides the pacing of the issue. Read Full Review

Meanwhile, Alfred is hallucinating of his army days until Bane lifts the rubble off of him. Bane chooses to work with him, because he recognized his training. He knew he was a soldier, and wants his help. However, Bane makes the decisions. Alfred is very polite, as he suggests to find the underground tunnels to find their way out. But they are attacked by some creepy looking monsters… But I thought these guys were taken care of by the Spectre last week…? I don't know. They take these goons down, and it's pretty cool seeing Alfred kick some butt, and Bane seems to respect Alfred more. They make their way to a wall, and Alfred says a password into it. He holds his breath, as gas sprays, knocking Bane out, and allowing Alfred access to a Batcomputer. Julia and Batman are happy, and Batwing reminds them that he is still trapped. The end. Alfred is great as always and the action set pieces staring him and Batman are a ton of fun, but the leaps in logic and the plentiful amount of conveniences was just too much for this fan to overlook. If you're just looking to sit back and be entertained I'm sure you'll get a lot more fun out of this book than I did, but for those of you who want a little more cohesion in your stories, you'll probably feel similarly to me. The good still overweights the bad, making that book better than average. Read Full Review

Alfred and Bane are on the cover of the issue, and the team-up we got was fantastic. Ray Fawkes delivers another fantastic script (his entire mini-arc these past three issues has been great), and Fernando Pasarin delivers some fantastic pencil work. The story they tell is wonderfully done, communicating the anguish and fear that Julia goes through throughout the issue, the calm and calculating Dark Knight as a leader, and the payoff of Alfred being a complete badass is awesome. The entire story from cover to cover is fantastic. And, those last few panels on the last page deliver an emotional payoff, as well as a fantastic reason to pick up next week's issue. This one comes HIGHLY recommended. Batman: Eternal, after a few weeks of spinning t heir wheels, has taken back off, starting with #29. more

To me, this was the best Ray Fawkes issue so far, but then, this was basically the only Ray Fawkes issue I liked at all. The Arkham elements, in themselves, are still as uninteresting as ever, but luckily, this issue focused more on Alfred's escape, and boy, he's a badass.
