Batgirl #10

Batgirl #10 is an excellent chapter in what has been a fun, entertaining arc. Babs & Oswald is a dynamic I hope gets revisited in the future often by this creative team because their on page chemistry is amazing….like every other panel in this comic. If you aren't reading Batgirl you are doing yourself a disservice as this is one of the best comics being published today. Read Full Review

Batgirl #10 proves once again that Hope Larson is a wonderful fit for Barbara Gordon. This light-hearted story is entertaining, adventurous, and rich with positive morals; the mystery is intriguing and well-paced, and the characters are well-defined and dynamically illustrated. Overall, Batgirl #10 serves its purpose in moving the plot along, but an overemphasis on Babs and Ethan's relationship, along with Babs' friends' relationships, makes for a crowded issue with attention spread in too many places for any of them to be particularly strong. The Penguin's involvement adds more comedy than expected though, and his dismissive, resentful view of his son should make for an interesting role as Batgirl tries to shut Ethan down. While this issue was a fun trip for Batgirl, I did have a couple of gripes. We did jump around from place to place which kind of created a choppy narative at times. Babs expressions and dialogue can be a little hokey at times, but that's mostly endearing for a Batgirl book. I don't really understand why Batgirl would just be playing ping-pong with Cobblepot at the beginning of the issue, that part seemed kind of off to me. In short, Batgirl #10 is a great middle-of-arc issue that gives you all the information you need to understand what's going on without overt infodumps, manages to deliver drama and suspense without a lot of wedged-in fighty-fighty or melodramatic nonsense, and also looks lovely. Read Full Review

Turns out the Internet is a dangerous thing, and I don't just mean the YouTube comments. The story creeps forward incrementally, but there are some nice character moments, and the debut of a new supervillain. There's also the debut of a new skill exhibited by an old supervillain, about which I am dubious. Read Full Review

Haters are going to hate this book. I'm waffling somewhere in the middle. There's some over-the-top silliness, but it's so over-the-top I can only assume it's deliberate. And part of me gives props to Larson for just going with it. Lightning fast costume change? Why not? Reconstructed autopilot car crash? It's like Babs has the Force! Ethan goes CEO to Stylin' Birdbrain without cause or warning? All the better to color things up. Put yourself in the mindset of a pre-teen and this is a pretty hip ride. For the adults, at least we get to see some fun cameos and Penguin's frothy appearance just might keep it classy. Read Full Review
