Batgirl #8

There were a lot of stories in this issue that were being told that is going to make the next couple of issues very interesting. Pick this issue up. It is one of my favorite issues from this week and is worth spending your money on. You will especially like it if you liked the Killing Joke and James Jr. story in Detective Comics. Despite having three pencillers and two inkers, the issue looks admirably consistent throughout. One gripe that still persists from past issues is that Barbara and her mother look nearly identical, making conversations between them confusing. They both have the same face, same red hair, and are of equal height. Unless mom got some serious botox, her face needs to be aged appropriately, and she should probably get a shorter haircut, if just for clarity's sake. Read Full Review

Batgirl has seemed like a book going through the motions. Simone opened with an arc that was trying to establish a villain and introduce the readers to a new version of the character. The book seemed to be lifeless. However, this is the issue that Simone shows the events that shaped Barbara Gordon up to this point and provides some earthshattering changes that will alter her from this point going forward. Well, certainly did not expect James Jr. to show up like this, out in the open. Given the solicits, there really wasn't anything to run off of where you could expect this. Surprising to say the least. Anyways, I liked the rest of the issue, Grotesque sort of fell flat, but the meat of the issue was really the final confrontation with Danny Weaver. That was really well done, and I really liked his dying words, which I quoted up there. It seems now, finally we can get past Baggage Babs, and really go headfirst into Babs at her prime. Some will say that issue #8 sets up a coming conflict between Batgirl and her brother James, the serial killer. While that might seem like a dark and interesting idea, to me it’s a cop out. Scott Snyder already gave us a brilliant story featuring James Gordon in Detective Comics before the big reboot. This feels like somebody taking table scraps and trying to make dinner out of it. The art for Batgirl is cool, but apparently it took three artists to put it together. It just feels like Batgirl is becoming a mess, one that I just don’t care about anymore. Read Full Review

It's not a bad looking issue and it's a very ambitious issue, but I hated pretty much every minute of it. The art, which was good, can't even persuade me to give it a higher score. I can't recommend it. Read Full Review
