Aquaman #11

Ivan Reis' art is some of the best in the industry today. His collaboration with the inkers, particularly Joe Prado, only enhance his already gorgeous renderings that harken back to the early days of Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and Tarzan. His is a very traditional style, which is refreshing to see in these days of unconventional comic book art. He and Johns are one of the most formidable teams currently working in comics. "The Others" continues to be dynamite. Johns is weaving an intricate melodrama that's less about the sinking of Atlantis and more about Arthur Curry's relationship with his past. While Black Manta represents the worst of Aquaman's history, the Others represent the best of his younger days. Unfortunately, Arthur is only focused on defeating Black Manta, forsaking the help of his allies and opting to rush in by himself. Black Manta's big find at issue's end also promises big things for the next issue. Read Full Review

It would not be out of the question to say that Johns' Aquaman will become one of the, if not the definitive runs for the character. If this doesn't merit our favorite undersea king his position as one of DC's icons, nothing will. Read Full Review

So, with gorgeous art and a fun story, it is safe to say that “Aquaman” # 11 is worth your $2.99. It isn't going to be the best thing you read this week, but it will be entertaining. I'drecommendpicking up some back issues if you haven't been following this title,as this is part five of an ongoing arc, and the lack of knowledge might impact the enjoyment just a tad. Well, this is the worst of the Aquaman series so far, but that being said, the worst issue of this Aquaman run is still better than 95% of the books on the shelf. While I loved the art and the Dead King part of this story, the middle of this book dragged and was a bit uninteresting for me. So, the book has a few problems but they can be forgiven due to the actual development of Aquaman's character. Johns clearly has a plan for our hero and it is nice to see him be the most interesting thing in his own book. This is a calm before the storm, which dumps a lot of information on the readers. This will hopefully allow the narrative to be less hindered by exposition in the coming months. Read Full Review

When we finally do get to an important piece of information, it's the last page, yep, I spent $3 to find out what weapon Black Manta would like to use to get revenge on Aquaman (should I spoil it so you don't waste you $3? Nope I'm not that guy"). I'm very disappointed with this issue however the story arc is not definitely beyond saving. In fact, up until this issue I thought it was damn good and entertaining. Next month when Johns concludes this arc we will be able to judge it as a whole instead of one bad issue. Read Full Review

Prelude: Now that the solicits have jumped back to calling this arc The Others and we reach part five, let's see how Johns and Reis go. The Good: Some great work with the Relics and The Others' past. Shin's character development here is really good. It's interesting seeing past and present Arthur/Aquaman and seeing how they differ yet coincide. Reis' art is great but here it's got an other worldly mystic vibe which works for the issue. Without doing much of anything, Manta grows even more threatening and I'm talking before the cliffhanger. The Bad: Since the structure has been switched up, we're back to me struggling to find a fault in the story. Conclusion: Everything starts to intersect in this issue and I'm lovin g what Johns and Reis have been doing for Aquaman and Black Manta in The Others. more
