Add to this more background on Alfred's connection to this new villain, as well as a thrilling continuation to the back-up story and I see no reason why you shouldn't pick up this comic next time you're at your local comic book store.   All-Star Batman #12 was a strong continuation of "The First Ally" arc as Alfred's history catches up to Batman's current mission. Scott Snyder did an excellent job building up Briar and the knight as credible threats even though they weren't shown in the present day. Snyder further stacks the deck against Batman by the big swerve Hush and his allies surprise the Dark Knight with. This all leads to build further anticipation for how Batman will be able to overcome the odds and successfully retrieve the Genesis Engine. Read Full Review

  All-Star Batman #12 is a wild ride. From seeing Batman captain a ship to Alfred screaming his lungs out, it's an all-out balls-to-the-wall extravaganza like no other. The intensity and grit are turned up to 11 and one has to wonder if the Dark Knight or Alfred will ever be the same after this mission. It's exactly the sort of nail-biting narrative that we expect from Snyder, and once again he delivers like only he can. Add this to your must-buy pile for the week. Read Full Review

  Thos is a solid if unremarkable entry in the overall excellent "The First Ally" arc. The main story is crazy swashbuckling entertainmentof the best sort, with conflicts and situations that are as insane as they are enjoyable. Some of the narrative choices need further context and explanation to truly gel with the story, but overall I'm loving this arc so far. Even the backup is engaging, gritty entertainment, warts and all. As far as we've come and with two issues to go, "The First Ally" is shaping up to be the best arc of All-Star Batman and a fitting sendoff to the series proper. Read Full Review

  The First Ally story continues with some twists and turns, but before a crazy cliffhanger there is a whole lot of exposition.  Scott Snyder wants to make sure the reader gets the pirate connections in his story and while it plays out pretty well, it also ruins the pace of the story a bit.  I'm still intrigued and excited to see how this story plays out, but this issue was a bit of a downer compared to the ones that came before it.   This book is not for me. It has highlights, like the Black and Whites and the glimpses into Alfred's past, but goofy one-liners like Bruce saying, "call me Captain Batman", take me out of the moment. Any story involving cloning can get twisted quickly and I'm afraid the complexity was too much for what I want out of a Batman book. Read Full Review
