Jul 26, 2017All-Star Batman has hit its stride as if it wasn't good enough before, it's even better now. Giving Metal a run for its money for the best Summer Blockbuster comic before it's even out. This is simply insanely good and everyone needs to have this title on their pull list. Read Full Review

Jul 27, 2017All Star Batman#12 has plenty of action, heart and twists. The Dark Knight shares the leading role with his faithful butler, who's past is coming back in a revealing way, albeit a little slower than expected. Despite the trip to the Caribbean being an enjoyable one, I'm ready to head back to Gotham. Read Full Review

Jul 28, 2017All-Star Batman #12 is another strong entry for "The First Ally" as the creative team move closer to revealing this mysterious foe. Add to this more background on Alfred's connection to this new villain, as well as a thrilling continuation to the back-up story and I see no reason why you shouldn't pick up this comic next time you're at your local comic book store. Jul 27, 2017Scott Snyder's ALL-STAR BATMAN #12 is a great, different angle on the Dark Knight. The story is harsh and unrelenting yet somehow fun at the same time. If you ever wanted to see Batman meet pirates, this is the issue for you! Read Full Review

Jul 27, 2017All-Star Batman #12 was a strong continuation of "The First Ally" arc as Alfred's history catches up to Batman's current mission. Scott Snyder did an excellent job building up Briar and the knight as credible threats even though they weren't shown in the present day. Snyder further stacks the deck against Batman by the big swerve Hush and his allies surprise the Dark Knight with. This all leads to build further anticipation for how Batman will be able to overcome the odds and successfully retrieve the Genesis Engine. Read Full Review

Jul 26, 2017I think this story would actually be strongest without the main Batman plot. If we were only getting the Alfred flashbacks, the modern day ties would still be evident and fun to catch, but the story would feel more cohesive. Read Full Review

Jul 26, 2017I am loving the main story and its unique focus on the relationship between Bruce and Alfred. The backup story still has potential, but I feel it made a major misstep in its portrayal of Batman's abilities as a crime fighter. Read Full Review

Jul 27, 2017Well, no one can say that Scott Snyder isn't having fun with one of his final issues on this book. But it's really a showcase for Rafael Albuquerque as an artist and a co-writer in the backup tale. Read Full Review

Jul 26, 2017All-Star Batman #12 is a wild ride. From seeing Batman captain a ship to Alfred screaming his lungs out, it's an all-out balls-to-the-wall extravaganza like no other. The intensity and grit are turned up to 11 and one has to wonder if the Dark Knight or Alfred will ever be the same after this mission. It's exactly the sort of nail-biting narrative that we expect from Snyder, and once again he delivers like only he can. Add this to your must-buy pile for the week. Read Full Review

Jul 26, 2017In a somewhat down issue, the back-up outshines the main story in some respects, but not all. The art on both fronts is pitch perfect but the story for each felt a bit lacking, despite the excellent fun to be had in the initial pages. Read Full Review

Jul 26, 2017Thos is a solid if unremarkable entry in the overall excellent "The First Ally" arc. The main story is crazy swashbuckling entertainmentof the best sort, with conflicts and situations that are as insane as they are enjoyable. Some of the narrative choices need further context and explanation to truly gel with the story, but overall I'm loving this arc so far. Even the backup is engaging, gritty entertainment, warts and all. As far as we've come and with two issues to go, "The First Ally" is shaping up to be the best arc of All-Star Batman and a fitting sendoff to the series proper. Read Full Review

Weird Science - Jim Werner
Jul 25, 2017The First Ally story continues with some twists and turns, but before a crazy cliffhanger there is a whole lot of exposition. Scott Snyder wants to make sure the reader gets the pirate connections in his story and while it plays out pretty well, it also ruins the pace of the story a bit. I'm still intrigued and excited to see how this story plays out, but this issue was a bit of a downer compared to the ones that came before it. Read Full Review

Nerd Church Radio - Noah O'Toole
Jul 26, 2017This book is not for me. It has highlights, like the Black and Whites and the glimpses into Alfred's past, but goofy one-liners like Bruce saying, "call me Captain Batman", take me out of the moment. Any story involving cloning can get twisted quickly and I'm afraid the complexity was too much for what I want out of a Batman book. Read Full Review

Bounding Into Comics - Daniel Mills
Jul 26, 2017Unfortunately, the art seems to follow suit: a bland and uninteresting veil cast over what should be a masterwork of the veteran artists behind it. Hopefully, those artists will inevitably return to greatness soon enough, but it won't be in the pages of All-Star Batman. Read Full Review

This was one of the more boring issues of All-Star Batman and one that I hope will not be representative of the rest of the arc.

ASBM will undoubtedly read much better in trades/collection formats. There are several good ideas here but everything feels so disconnected. The 14 issue run ending seems appropriate, especially since the back-ups are limping to the finish line.
