  I don’t really chase the Star Wars franchise anymore; it’s been dead to me for quite some time, but I’m still really enjoying this Vader series of books. I can’t wait until the next issue and I’m hoping that there is another series planned to follow this one because I’m enjoy the early days of Vader.   If you're picking this up solely to dive deeper into Darth Vader's story, you'll be hugely disappointed. He doesn't say a single word and instead oozes intimidation as he poses and occasionally wields a lightsaber. This issue merely sets up the very simple basics of the story and presents us with the key players. Seeing as this takes place before Episode IV, we know this seemingly awesome assassin won't succeed in his order to kill Vader. The only real question here is if his failure will result in death, some kind of escape from Vader's tight force grip, or if he'll simply just trick the man who hired him. Certainly not a bad debut, but not particularly compelling, either. Read Full Review

  While the art team does a great job of making the most of what is available the overall impression of the Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin was pretty bland. Hopefully future issues involve more of the Sith Lord than this one did, or at least introduces more diverse and interesting locations. With the vast Star Wars universe at their disposal there's no reason this series be a great entry. Even if the focus does not center on Darth Vader a focus on the master assassin could be very entertaining. It's off to a slow start, but only time will tell if this series as a whole can enrich the extended universe or get lost in it. Read Full Review

  Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin was a rather bland establishing issue that barely featured its title character at all. While there was nothing specifically wrong with the issue, the overall feeling I came away from it was indifference. My hope is that the rest of the miniseries will be better, but as an introductory issue, it just doesn't catch my excitement. Read Full Review

Or if you want something that's already collected, try out last year's Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison, where the art and the narrative work together to bring you an uncompromising and intriguing Star Wars story.   As far as opening issues goes this one is average. There are some decent enough elements in the issue but the overall plot is not that interesting and character work just isn't there.
