  I do also like that the entire team working on this book seems very cohesive, and sometimes it's just so obvious when a book is thrown together from sources that are not united.   The usage of shadows is masterful. I love that, even with the assaulting sense of the break in, the trio allow this piece of levity to flourish. It shows that this comic will have some darkness in it, but it wont be all gritty. It will be a well-balanced hodge-podge of joking, epic witches, ridiculous villains, and a dash of dark.   Overall, SPELL ON WHEELS is about witches as real women, and borrowing from Pagan culture is an excellent way to delve into that theme. Of course, the writer did take a few liberties. For instance, an essential plot point in the comic is that witchcraft is passed down genetically through a small population. However, in Paganism, anyone can learn witchcraft. And yet, overall, SPELL ON WHEELS #1 perfectly captures the basics and the feel of living as a Pagan woman. Read Full Review

  Dark Horse's Spell on Wheels launches with a terrific first issue. Right up front they establish great well-developed characters and a real fun little quest for those characters to go on.   Overall Spell on Wheels #1 has me hooked and I'm all strapped in and ready to ride shotgun in Jolene, that beautiful convertible coup that will taking them on the journey. This issue ends with the witches knocking on the door of the first person who bought some of their stolen magical loot off of the dark web magic ebay. I can't wait to see how it all plays out, because Spell on Wheels looks like it is going to be a fun road trip romp with some strong female characters and a killer story. Read Full Review

  Spell on Wheels #1's execution lives up to its intriguing premise as Kate Leth, Megan Levens, and Marissa Louise aptly balance friendship and magic when Claire, Andy, and Jolene team up to retrieve the magical items from the evil ex. That sentence makes the comic sound like a fetch quest, but the personality quirks, Levens'beautiful blend of cartooning and realism, and the promise of danger to come make this series worth picking up.   The comic's practical magic use within the real world makes for ever-so-slight hints of the worlds of Harry Potter and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, though that's an easy comparison for most modern urban fantasy with a youngish cast. (But at least this cast isn't so damn white.) Spell on Wheels is its own unique experience though, full of strong and interesting ladies within some solid world-building that I'm really excited to delve into more deeply. (I'm more than curious about everyone's families they keep mentioning.) And while it is definitely a fitting Halloween read (duh, it stars three witches), this is a comic you'll want to continue following long after you've thrown away all that dreadful candy corn.   So, does Spell on Wheels manage to pass my meticulously researched (and not at all just thrown together) first issue test? Well lets see, shall we? Interesting characters that dont feel like one-dimensional cardboard cut-outs? Check. An intriguing story with enough meat on its bones to justify the rest of the series? Check. And, most importantly, does it make me want to pick up the second issue? Hell to the yes! Leth, Levens and Louise have put together a charming, funny and intriguing story with some fantastically realised main characters, and I for one cant wait to see where the rest of this series takes us.   Despite its strengths, however, Spell on Wheels isn't perfect. Leth may have learned from her mistakes on "School Spirit," but the issue ends a little abruptly, tacking on a scene that might have worked better as the beginning of the next issue. It's one piece of information too many in an issue that already toes the line on giving the reader too much in one sitting. Still, that's a minor quibble for a book that's mostly very fun and very well-written. It's worth picking up regardless of your feelings on fall or Halloween. Read Full Review

Kate Leth, Megan Levens, and Marissa Louise conjure pure comic book magic with this first issue, hooking readers with a tight down to earth script and fantastic body positive artwork. Though readers will have to wait for #2 for the actual road trip to start in earnest Spell on Wheels #1 is a fantastic first outing for the Sister Witches and the trio of talented ladies behind them.   Something you wouldn't expect is that the sisters' house is really vibrant. Marissa Louise's colors help emphasize Leth's creation of an everyday type of witch. This so epically breaks the stereotype that witches are dark, morbid, scary creatures. These women look and act like normal people. This isn't, of course, the first time we're seeing a "normal" witch, but it definitely makes for a good story. For a fun and adventurous read, look no further! Read Full Review
