The second installment of Mae hits all the right notes here as it works through a lot of stuff, some of which feels like it could have been extended to a third issue without any problems just to breathe a little more. We've got a good handle on our two leads of Abbie and Mae right now and there's a lot of anticipation about what the next issue will bring as the move to the other side. Folks who enjoyed the first issue will definitely like what this one has in store as it expands and grows things naturally all while continuing with the great look and design that Gene Ha brings to life here. This is definitely the type of book for all you fantasy fans out there. It has a bit of sci-fi thrown in, as well. Ha is probably one of the best storytellers I know and whose work I have the pleasure of reading while here at ComicWow! So while the comic itself is visually beautiful and the forces behind all of the secondary characters is clear, the main character feels like an empty space. It is hard to invest in an empty space or be interested in what happens to her. I am curious to see what's on the other side of the magic door, so I'm still reading to see how Ha spins his tale. Overall, this was a great follow-up to the first issue. It elaborates just slightly on the fantasy world teased in the first issue and has a good amount of action. The art is generally impressive and there are some quality character designs. However, the pacing in this issue is a bit off as some of the transitions feel a bit rushed/chaotic. Also, I would have liked if there were a few more panels dedicated to the action scenes in order to flesh them out a bit more.
