Lobster Johnson: Caput Mortuum works as both an introduction to the character and a fan-pleasing addition to the BPRD universe. It's a neatly crafted one-shot from a group of talented and experienced creators who know their craft very well. While it's unlikely to blow anyone away and doesn't have the space to explore its setting or ideas in any depth, it's a highly entertaining read and it certainly gets the thumbs (claws?) up from me. Overall, the complete package is a good one. The one-shot is set in such a way that as a new fan to the character you can pick this up easily. If youre already established, all the better, youll love this story either way. Now I need to read more B.P.R.D stories and Lobster Johnson, because Im hooked. I've been thoroughly enjoying these Lobster Johnson one-shots even more than the limited series offered by creator Mike Mignola and the talent he's gathered around him. The title character seems to lend himself well to these action-packed, brisk pulp adventure stories. The real-life history provides the perfect accompaniment to the classic tone of the adventure serial that's captured here. The overall tone of the plot and various story elements seems like a cross between The Shadow and one of the better Indiana Jones flicks. Furthermore, the dark, serious tone of the plot and action makes for an interesting contrast with the absurd tone of the protagonist's name. This tremendously fun comics storytelling, and it's thoroughly accessible, allowing even those unfamiliar with Lobster Johnson or other elements of the Mignola-verse to enjoy and appreciate it. "Lobster Johnson: Caput Mortuum" is a very well created, fun and smart book. There is an old school sensibility to this title, as well as the character and his world, and everyone on the creative team works to ensure an authentic vibe is constructed. Lobster is the hero who gets things done instantly without anguishing or agonizing over it all. He acts and the world responds accordingly to his presence and certainty.
