I was laughing out loud, and it's been a minute since a comic made me laugh out loud. Not only once or twice, but throughout! The interesting thing about Welcome to Twilight is that you laugh at the cost of your sanity. It requires just a tiny bit of your sanity, so you don't mind at all. The comedy in this book is vicious and caustic, it's what I'm saying. Let me put it to you this way: Have you ever caught yourself watching reruns of TV shows from 30+, 40 years ago at 2 AM, and suddenly felt an unidentified malaise developing just on the edge of your general well-being, to the point where you have to break your glassy-eyed expression and ponder just what the hell you're doing with your life? At first, you think maybe it's something you at e, but then you realize it might be a midlife crisis or something. Well, Welcome to Twilight captures that malaise and masterfully turns it into an oddly introspective, intelligent, acerbic action-comedy, a little buzzed on warm beer and all. By the way, if that show you were watching often happens to be Miami Vice, this book is definitely for you. This is one of those comics that makes you remember what comic books can do that no other media can. There's a beautiful pacing here, with illustration, narration, and dialogue dancing together over the gutters with a completely bizarre charm. Pretty much how Swifty skates through space like a crazy cue ball hitting bad guys in the story, I felt like this book was smacking me, but I couldn't stop laughing. It's that good. The characters have weight behind them, even the supporting ones, and their troubles and neuroses manifesting in all sorts of crazy ways through their appearance is the best type of goofy fun there is. Comic books, man. Mr. Allred's style and visual mordacity are in full strength here. The creative team really knocked it out of the park with this one. An incredibly entertaining, refreshing read. I can't wait for the next issue already. Strong recommend. more
