Astounding Villain House One-Shot #1

I really didn't need to review this issue, but I couldn't just let it pass by. It's a great one-shot that I would highly recommend to any fan of the superhero genre that doesn't take it so seriously. Hell I would also recommend it if you just need a laugh this week because it's not going to disappoint you. Since they're short stories we're in and out pretty quickly, but Wheeler does a really good job of fleshing out his characters quickly and working in a quirky twist or two along the way. This is a specific genre of humor that parodies super-heroes in a very sideways fashion, not much emphasis on the super-hero battle though we get a few punches and kicks, it's wry humor focusing on the verbal and situational. Your enjoyment of this comic, as with any comedy, is going to have a lot with how well it fits into your own sense of humor. This plays quite nicely to my personal sense of humor, I liked it a lot. Its not hard to see why Wheeler is an Eisner award winner. This is a really fun and funny book, and its great to take a break from a serious super hero book and pick this up and read it for fun, because lets be honest, thats what were all here to do. Have fun! Read Full Review

I really would love to see some more "Villain House" stories, be they in "Dark Horse Presents," another one-shot, or any other medium. Once you read these stories, I'm pretty sure you'd agree. Wheeler's "Astounding Villain House" is a brilliant bite of dark superheroics, and if we're lucky it will be the first of many. For a slice of Halloween Humor you should probably pick this up, but then if you don't like nice things and you prefer the caped and cowled, serious and meaningful books, this might not be the one for you. Read Full Review

Too bad, because it could have been a funny, clever, well drawn work, and instead, it was none of those things. Its like Doctor Horrible, without the wit, humor, or soul. Leave this trash rag on the shelf, and spend your money on something that will ruin your teeth like candy, or kill brain cells like booze, or do both, like meth. Read Full Review

Again, I may be the minority and I just don't get it, and you're probably right, but unless you are familiar with Wheeler's work and understand where it's humor is derived I highly suggest moving on to something else. For fans of Too Much Coffee Man it'll get high marks from me not so much. What I find “astounding” is that anyone finds Astounding Villain Houseremotely amusing. Pass. Read Full Review

$3.50. 32 Giant pages! no ADs!! . . . .Some fun stuff here from an old Indie & DIY legend Shannon Wheeler, NOT Mignola, Golden or Stenbeck. hehe. Glad to see Dark Horse plenty of freedom to do 4 superpowers spoofs, his way. His humor is dry and sarcastic in a mudan way that boarders on absurd. it reminds me of great 70's/80s independent comics, that used more of your snarky brain in commentary on life & funny-books, instead of bright, sugar coated drivel of the mainstream.
