Dec 13, 2023What I loved about this first issue is its fast pace. The other characters like Juan, Oscar and Doc all have distinct personalities. The writing is excellent, and each panel makes me want to go on to the next. Now, the illustration is detailed, David does a good job of shading and exploring with different shades. Yet again, BOOM! Studios has given Maria and David the opportunity to bring a fantastic story to the forefront. I can't wait until the second issue is released. Read Full Review

Dec 13, 2023The crime story elements here are limited. Readers going into this issue expecting an intricate story set heavily in that genre wont find it (at least at this point in the series). The hints toward the supernatural drive curiosity for the next issue. For now, Underheist #1 suggests a stronger story developing over future issues than a truly gripping issue all on its own. Dec 13, 2023Underheist #1 isn't a bad debut but it just doesn't excite. The story is something we've seen many times before and what might set itself apart doesn't get a focus. There also isn't much time spent on David to really care what happens to him or feel sorry for his choices. Overall, it's very average. Read Full Review

Dec 18, 2023"Underheist #1 is okay. It is not intriguing enough to encourage reading it, nor is it inadequately composed enough to discourage the same. In a sense, this lack of much to speak about may be worse than it being deliberately bad or good, as it seems just forgettable altogether. Read Full Review

A lot to like in this debut issue. Not Lapham's finest work, that will always be Stray Bullets, but difficult to judge yet based on only 1 issue. I'm unaccustomed to seeing his work in colour and the lettering is pretty wonky. These, however, are minor criticisms in a book with plenty of potential.

I had some high hopes for this series, but it struggled to have a lot to care about. I'm slightly intrigued by the plot and what might be involved with this demonic type plot, but I'm going to need a solid issue 2 to stay invested.
