Buffy the Vampire Slayer is off to a tremendous start. It's moving at a mile a minute, picking up all of our old favorites from the TV show and displaying them in a brand new light. This creates a renewed appreciation for all of them. It helps that the artwork is gorgeous and the story and dialogue can go toe-to-toe with some of the best from Joss Whedon. Buffy #2 reassures me that this reboot is in good hands. It manages to swirl together some iconic Buffy moments - such as Buffy and Giles in the library - and repurpose them for a modern age. Willow is clearly still Willow, in all the ways she responds to things. But in these comics she is much closer to the wiccan of later seasons of the show, than the insecure quiet teenager of the high school days. Which makes sense given the fact that in 2019 Willow would've had more freedom and opportunity to explore who she is than 1997's Willow. Read Full Review

If you weren't invested in Buffy the Vampire Slayer after the first issue, the second issue brings out more of the potential that this series has to offer. I mean, who would be crazy to still need a reason to pick up a new issue of Buffy? If you're a fan, then you know what you want from this series, and a new experience just sweetens the deal. Character development throughout, with several changes to shake up veteran fans, but little action. I enjoyed this, but didn't love this. I need to see some more Slayer action. There's also a lot characters being thrown at the reader right away, with teases of what they are capable of. The visuals are good, with my favorite character still not looking like herself. With Buffy Summers having Slayer duties, which include working with Giles to research the vamp with a shiny artifact, and avoiding her mother's new boyfriend (demon or demon victim within a few issues?), and Willow spending time with her high school girlfriend, Xander feels noticeably left out of things here. Bellaire is building to something -- Xander's detachment makes it clear that keeping the gang separated is intentional and not an oversight -- but without those core relationships intact, this issue of Buffy feels like its missing something. Read Full Review

Ill definitely going to be sticking with it for now, but Im still waiting for that one moment to reach out and grab me like the show frequently did. Still way into this. I don't mind the reinvention of the characters. I actually find it a lot more interesting than I would if it was just a repeat. And I think it may be a chance for some characters to shine in ways they didn't get a chance to in the show. Like Robin Wood. I feel he was a bit of wasted potential in the show, but introducing him here as a possible friend/love interest nice and early may give him a better chance. Also, making Cordelia the nicest person ever was totally unexpected but it works so far. Xander is an odd character. He's gotten a lot of backlash in the years since the show ended as being a bit of a creep, for lack of a better word. I wasn't ever one to turn against the character, but it's a vocal part of the fand om. So I can see why they're going the way they are with him in this series. Overall, I'm super excited about this series and eagerly await the next issue. more
