Byte Sized #1

In Byte-Sized #1 Cullen Bunn once again showcases his talent for blending genres. This first issue has horror and sci-fi elements, all wrapped up in a Christmas bow. The last few pages left me legitimately excited to see where the story will go from here. The art team breathe life into Bunn's script and give each panel a unique look. Byte-Sized #1 is a great holiday genre read thats reminiscent of classics such as Gremlins, powered in equal parts by strong writing and art. Read Full Review

A fairly competent imitation of classic 80's children's movies that is brought down by slow pacing and an artistic team that would probably be happier doing something else. Read Full Review

As a first chapter there's no reason to stop, but with a whole month between this and Byte-Sized #2, it's questionable how many readers will think to continue the story in 2021. Read Full Review

Do you love stories where robotic creatures break free from the government stooges and eventually befriend some young child? Im pretty sure thats where were going with Byte-Sized. I get that there's probably a lot of inspiration from the likes of Gremlins or Batteries Not Included but maybe I need more issues to get some enjoyment from Byte-Sized. Kudos to AWA Studios for continuing to do different material with everything. Their scope is so wide in what they put out that you are bound to find something youll like. It just might not be this. An investigation of strange noises is interrupted by his human, Katy, who discovers him face to face with a strange little robot. Assuming Gizmo has just gotten into another Christmas gift, Katy brings the robot into her room and falls back asleep. Completely unaware that the robot beside her had recently escaped from a secret experimental military compound. Think Small Soldiers meets Short Circuit. This should be a fun series that at the beginning reminded me a little of a light hearted version of We3. The art has a very cartoon vibe to it which should work well with unique robot design. Presumably cute robots escape from a lab and wind up at a home in the suburbs. Nothing really past that in issue 1, in fact a book so short on content that they had room for 3 pages of writer/creator reflections (in really big, poorly-laid out type) and 5 pages of an E-Ratic preview. Cullen Bunn's story isn't much - introduces the lab, introduces the family, introduces the still largely-shrouded robots...and that's it. And only 3 more issues in this miniseries...gotta pick up the pace! Nelson Blake II's art is straight out of Disney animation, so much so that I'd be surprised if some streamer doesn't pick this one up sooner than later. Snakebite Cortez's coloring, considering the simple artwork, is terribly overwrought...sh adings and smudges where a clean, flat color scheme would be more than sufficient (and perhaps would lend even more to the kids' animation style). Not sure I would recommend this one unless what I've described totally is your thing. The sub-par rating is purely a function of the fact that Bunn had pages to tell the story and chose note to do so. When you only start with 25-ish pages of sequential art, that's unforgiveable and leaves the customer feeling taken. more
