  Black Nerd Problems - Carrie McClain

  This issue is very important for a number of reasons, one being the emotional depth. Raven who was wronged by her brothers and ultimately the men in her family is confronted a person, a friend, whom she wronged by order of her father as a child. Raven is faced with a multitude of emotions and most of them not in the positive direction because of her role in a scheme that ultimately ruined a family, quite possibly a childhood. This was really neat to see in terms of character development and I hope to see Raven, who is now much older and more mature do her best to keep her word and seek justice not only for herself but for those caught in the undertow.   But my personal favorite part of Raven Pirate Princess #3 is the funny, anachronistic, and definitely leaning upon the fourth wall subplot featuring Katie and Sunshine recruiting her gaming friends. This section happens to be quite motivational with a triumvirate of three prominent female comic book creators giving Katie the little nudge she needs to be non-compliant and go on an adventure with Raven despite society, which wants to her get married and take a backseat to male characters.   Princeless: Raven, The Pirate Princess is a delightful jaunt into feminist pirates. The story, characters, and setting all feel natural and flow together nicely. Issue #3 is easy for newcomers to jump in and the cliffhanger should leave you wanting issue #4 as soon as you can get your hands on it. Read Full Review

  Ravenis a fun story about friends overcoming hurts to start new journeys together. Readers of all ages can learn from Raven and Ximena: two strong characters who respect each other despite having very different backgrounds. Rosy Higgins and Ted Brandt give each character unique style and personality that shines through every facial expression. There are no cookie-cutter characters in Jeremy Whitley's pirate adventure, as Ravensets the bar for what positive representation in comics can be. Read Full Review

  'Princeless - Raven: The Pirate Princess' is a delightful series full of wonderfully diverse characters set on an incredible journey. Yet, the creators don't take anything for granted. They trust in their characters and their audience to invest in not just the action and jokes but all the emotional ties that bind them. It continues to be an excellent comic regardless of genre.
