I would definitely recommend this book; I was late jumping on this series, but was given access through "The Mighty World of Marvel" UK reprint (#35). Or alternatively, it's available in trade paperback form.

A good plot with plenty of room to grow, and its just straight-up fun to read. It's packed with colourful action and a colourful cast. If Avengers vs X-Men has you burned out on melodrama, this is a welcome change.
