Between the nice nod to The Thing with a possessed puppy and the countdown to the holiday utilized in Halloween (and expertly integrated within the panels by artist Michael Lee-Graham), the creators love for the horror genre bleeds through every page. Readers can only hope Our Final Halloween returns for many issues to come.

Despite its slight technical flaws, Driftwood Pirates earns praise as a strong first issue aimed at children while admirably avoiding crass humor and excessive violence. With safe action and laughs, such as a pirate confusing the rules for Poker with Go Fish, Driftwood Pirates will steal smiles from even the surliest of sailors.

Hopefully, moving forward, these creators will refine their already admirable skills and develop Sparks to its fullest potential. However, curious readers should be aware that given the profanity, sex, blood and violence, Sparks #1 should carry a For Mature Readers warning.
