    Valen the Outcast is a gloriously brutal, campy, and gory exercise in barbaric fantasy. For the one U.S. Dollar it would cost you to pick it up, give it a shot. It is well worth it. Read Full Review

    Matteo Scalera boasts a kinetic style that conveys action quite well. His work looks like a cross between the styles of Ron (Ultimate Captain America) Garney and Humberto (Amazing Spider-Man) Ramos. The design for the title character is a solid, Hulk-like one that conveys an imposing, powerful presence, but the most striking visual is that of the villain, clad in a skull mask. The only disappointing aspect to be found in the art is the unfortunate sexualization of the only female character, a strong-willed, independent sorceress who's portrayed either as naked or clad in scant fabric. It doesn't seem in keeping with her character, so therefore, her appearance seems designed to titillate a hetero male readership. Read Full Review

    Through it all Nelson deftly laid ground work for the journey going forward, after all no fantasy adventure is done alone. He brings in a scantly clad tattoo artist and the 1400s version of Han Solo along for the ride. These people have had dealings with our Undead liege in the past and they aren't the most friendly of traveling companions. The overarching themes you find in every fantasy story are here, but is that really a bad thing? I don't think so, mostly because of how the book closes. Lets just say our Necromancer has a surprise that made this book going forward something I will want to keep reading. Read Full Review

    For a dollar you can't go wrong with this issue, but Ireally think that the ground work to something cool has been planted in thisfirst issue and that the second will be worth the full cover price. All thename drama aside this is a great book for Boom! to end the year on. It's anoriginal IP, it's only a dollar and it uses its stable of talent to keepeverything in company. Plus if you're a cover whore you've got plenty to pickfrom, so grab yourself a copy already. Read Full Review

    At an introductory price of just one dollar, it would have been hard to not get your money's worth. "Valen the Outcast" #1 was pleasant enough, though, that I'll give it another issue to see where Nelson and Scalera go, now that the setup and exposition phase appears to be over. At the core of "Valen the Outcast" is a strong concept, and I want to see just what they're going to do with it. Read Full Review
